How NOT to hold an open house

By
Real Estate Agent with Dominion Fine Properties SA582226000

Yesterday, I was showing homes to a potential buyer when we saw an open house in an area, but the home wasn't on our list.  We decided to go look at it anyway since we were there.

At the door, we found the door to be locked and rang the bell.  The agent showed up and opened the door.  I handed him my business card and he said, "oh, you're an agent?"  Sniffed disdainfully and walked away.  That's it, no welcome, no come in and walk around, no let me know if you have any questions, NOTHING.

My buyer said, "let's go - I don't want to be interrupting him."  So, we left.

Good luck Mr. Unprofessional agent.  Maybe that's one of the reasons the home has been on the market for almost 2 years!!!!!

What a shame.  That is no way to get buyers to feel all warm and fuzzy about a house!  It appears that seller has chosen the wrong agent.

The door was locked? AND he had an attitude? Is this person NOT trying to sell the home? Maybe it was this agents home and he was just trying to get buyers......too strange.

I thought now days an agent would get excited at the prospect of ANY company showing up at an open house.

I still like the sniff and turn his head away attitude, like I was a piece of caca on his shoe or something.

Juli:  I think that either Stephanie is right (about using it solely as a method to get buyers), or this agent is stingy and only wants to do a transaction if he can get paid for BOTH the buying and the selling commission (because he doesn't want to split his pay).

Either way, it seems unprofessional--at best--and unscrupulous at worst.

I hope that you don't run into too many more people like this guy.

First of all, no matter the reason, he was incredibly rude.  I am thinking that maybe he wasn't the listing agent but was holding it open to get buyer leads.  Even if that is was the case, there is no need to be so ungracious.  Ugh - what a pill.  Sorry you had to deal with it.  Hopefully you've found your buyer a house by this time!  :-)

What a shame there are agents out there still acting this way. Good for you and your buyer for leaving and finding a better home.
