Rule #9 Remember You are Selling a House not Your Family!

By
Real Estate Agent with Equity Rise Real Estate Group/Keller Williams/Chantilly, VA

Recently I was previewing a home for sale in Centreville that was competing against my listing.  The home was very clean and neat, which was no small feat since the family had 6 children.   Proof that there were 6 children in the family was evident by the two sets of twin beds  AND the two cribs in the 3 upstairs bedrooms.

The family room was small but it was located directly off the kitchen which a lot of buyers like.  However, I knew they had 6 children before I even went upstairs by the 6  - 11'x14' photographs of each child hanging across the full length of the wall above the couch.  The family room was narrow to begin with so the pictures made me feel like I was invading the family's personal space.

Don't get me wrong; I have an entire hallway wall in my own home dedicated to family photos, but my home is not on the market!  When selling your home take down and put away all personal items and your home features will pop instead of being hidden behind your 2010 school pictures!

Agents:  Please help your sellers sells their home faster by recommending they remove all personal pictures from walls.

Homeowners:  Your family pictures and mementos are the most precious items you own, so pack them up first and keep them safe until you move into your next home.

I hear this all the time. HGTV says it, stagers, and its even being blogged about here. So it must be true. Pictures (as long as they don't take over the room) don't bother me a bit. What I want my seller's to do is de-clutter! THAT drives me crazy! :)
