I happened to run across my husband's photos from our trip to Yellowstone National Park in September 2008.

This thermal feature has some walkways behind it.
Most thermal features have these great walkways to protect from soil erosion and also protect the human visitors from slipping, getting burned from scalding hot water, etc. Several times when I was at a thermal feature, there were bison/buffalos in the vacinity drinking or keeping warm (it was cold enough to snow).
