Lahaina Long Run

By

If you sleep in late on the morning of your weekend long run you'll pay for it later when you are slogging along in the Lahaina heat.  After 9 AM Front Street is a bit more crowded so you wind up running in the street to avoid the window shopping tourists.

This morning our late start turned out to be a bonus.  It is the morning of the Kamehameha Day parade.  Front Street was closed to traffic and locals took up the best viewing spots with the beach chairs and breakfasts.  We ran past the staging area with its lei covered floats, red convertibles waiting for the beauties they would carry, decked out riders on their costumed horses and everything that goes with them.

Heading out of Lahaina proper toward Kaanapali we pass a big grill set and cover with huli huli chicken.  A sign encourages us to "Get em while dey hot!!!"  We keep running.

The trail through the road side parks take us toward Canoes Beach.  And today, according to an invisible announcer somewhere is the "Battle Royal."  Canoe clubs from all over have gathered for the big races here on Kamehameha weekend.  There are keikis, uncles, aunties, tutus, barbeques with their own sweet aroma and activity everywhere.

We're tempted to stop and watch, but we need to get in the miles so we pass the Hyatt Regency and run toward the Sheraton which is our turn around spot today.  We make there, make the turn and head back past all of the activity again.

The canoe races are fully underway with hundreds of cheering fans and sweet aromas from grills.  The huli huli chicken is about done as is the parade.  As we get into Lahaina we walk to cool down and decide to see what is going on at the Banyan Tree.  We find our friend, Siu, selling her jewelry and lots of people milling about looking at the cool stuff.

Next week we'll try to start earlier.  I wonder if it will be as much fun?
