Trinity, FL- Timber Greens on the golf course. We watched this Great Egret for quite some time on a sunny Sunday in the very early morning hours. At this point, he seems to be enjoying looking at his reflection in the pond; I don't blame him: he is a handsome fellow (or girl, as the case may be-it is hard to tell because males and females are identical in appearance).
The Great Egret or Great White Egret is found across much of the world, from southern Canada south to Argentina, and in Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. Actually a white heron, the differences between them are vague, it is known as the Great Egret because it is the largest egret in the world. However, there is a white form of the Great Blue Heron which is even larger.
Once known here as the American Egret, the name was changed when it's range was tracked around the world.
