Summer in the City - Outdoor Events in Manhattan
Central Park is the perfect place to spend a relaxing day, or enjoy a pleasant summer evening. And what better way to enjoy this fabulous oasis in our concrete jungle than the free events in the park? From the Rumsey Playfield mid-park at 70th Street, to the Great Lawn, and the Naumberg Bandshell, you can enjoy a long list of events from "The Go-Go's to the "Jupiter Symphony Chamber Players." I'll address the events at Rumsey Playfield in this post, and will follow up with the others in a separate posting.
"Central Park SummerStage" is a 25 year old program that has been run by the City Parks Foundation since 1994, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving and maintaining the parks throughout the city. They select artists that represent a range of genres, making sure that the series has something for just about everyone. The music program hosts legends in the business as well as emerging artists, and the spoken word series provides a forum for playwrights, performers, poets, and lyricists; and presents one-person theatrical productions. The Good Morning America series (GMA) is also free, and their events take place from 7 AM to 9 AM.
Have a great summer!
