Jay, it all boils down to the greater the risk, the greater the reward. Some folks just like to play it safe. Me, how far out on that limb can I go before it breaks or I take wing...
"Well" in terms of what, Jay? Invention? Innovation? World contribution in terms of medical advances? Public health? Water treatment? Fabulous GNP growth, which wealth they shared with all the world? Much of their technological advancement came through spies and stealing - space, military-industrial complex, biological warfare, nuclear technology. But I digress!
Some would argue with you (like my aunt) that it was not "Russia" doing the gun holding but the Soviet Union!

Wallace - that word can apply in many contexts as to what was done in the last 10 years - to economic principles, to Bush, to our free enterprise system, and now to health care. I could go on. That was a word the classical liberals, like Adam Smith, Ricardo, Washington, Jefferson and most recently Friedman used a lot.

Steve - capitalism is something most people, who invoke the word as having four letters, cannot define. They haven't any understanding what it does. - either for people or societies.
Also, you gotta love it when someone defines words used in the post! The right word means everything...
