Use What U Have Room Makeovers - Design 4 the Times

By
Home Stager with Reinventing Space

From paint company trend forecasts, to our favorite home décor magazines - the new 2010 decorating tune is "Everything old is new again."  With décor buzz words such as aged patina, heirloom, archetypal, and artisan - It's time to take a new look at our old stuff!

It's so yesterday to announce that your home is filled with all brand new.  Open any home magazine today and there is feature after feature about re-purposing furniture, shopping flea markets and decorating with vintage finds.  Wouldn't it be refreshing not to have to run to retail to solve your decorating dilemmas?

What if you could get a new room using the stuff you already have?

You can!

Welcome to a new era of interior decorating and design for the times.  Gone are the days when a fancy suited designer would sweep into your home declaring, "Darling - Everything must go!"  All new is now a "No- No."

They're call Interior Stylists, Re-designers or Arrangers - niche decorators that specialize in using what the homeowner already has.  In these belt tightening, environmental conscious times; these makeover wunderkinds sweep through your home and within a matter of hours, reposition, re-hang and redisplay your furniture, art and accessories. They stylishly arrange your space with a pizazz and a wow factor worthy of a magazine cover and scour your home to see what treasures you've squirreled away.  Accessories, furniture and other finds that you just didn't know what to do with, may end up as the fabulous finishing touch to a perfect new room!

They'll informatively suggest how that old chair you inherited would be a wonder with a new fabric wardrobe, how to turn that unused TV armoire into a bar, or with a new hue, that old chest of drawers could be show stopper for your foyer. These pros are clever.  After the room makeover they'll leave you a "let's chat list" with more ideas, items to further complete the space, or pieces that may have seen better days.

What do you need to know about hiring these clever Room Makeover experts?

  • Money - Since the concept of a Room Makeover is based on using what you already own, there is an immediate savings.  Because there are so many variables, fees are based on your specific scope of work, but most room makeovers cost less than what you would pay for a single piece of new furniture.
  • Time -Makeovers typically take between three and seven hours, whereas conventional redecorating methods can take weeks of making selections, ordering and then waiting for delivery of your new furnishings. When you have a Room Makeover performed, plan on entertaining your friends and family the very same evening in your fabulous "new" home!
  • Comfort-In addition to the pleasure of being surrounded by familiar objects that you know and love, gone is the anxiety that comes from purchasing "NEW" and wondering if it will "WORK" once you get it home.  Your past purchases have been validated, your collections beautifully displayed and your heirlooms celebrated. A Room Makeover artfully transforms your belongings into a picture perfect setting, instantly.
  • What if my furnishings don't match, can I still have a great looking home? -Absolutely! Whether it's a certain element of color or style, there is generally a common thread that runs through every home. The advantage of a Room Makeover is having a trained and objective eye to pull it together. Once your furnishings have been properly placed and accessorized, you will once again fall in love with all your wonderful choices!
  • Am I Ready for a Room Makeover? - Your room makeover expert will begin with an in-home evaluation.  She'll discuss your goals, priorities and challenges for your rooms.  After a tour of your home, she'll quote you a per room price for the makeover and schedule a date to actually begin the work.

So, if you're ready to make your home your own, celebrate what you already have, finally pull together your rooms, and have a space that is a one-of-a-kind - Hire a Room Makeover professional.

Ginger - My elevator speech always goes like this - They say, oh cool your a designer(decorator, stager, stylist?) I AM! But, instead of the typical -Me telling you you need to throw out all your stuff; I use that you already have and THEN we'll talk about shopping... You see the light bulb go off, they'll retreive HGTV, say you're kidding, or I just can't accessorize..... The door is open and now you can explain in detail...

This service makes a lot of sense in today's world -- who has time and extra money for buying new?  Using what you have is fun, smart, and makes you feel good since you're re-cycling items and giving them new life.  Good post!

Kathy, On that same note, not to put a pin into the home staging balloon - Let's us not forget - There are far more homeowners, including "Just Moved-in," that can use One Day Room Makeover services from you than homes on the market...

We have been called for many redesign jobs recently. Your blog is great Julea, as it addresses the existing homeowner market. One that stagers often forget. Thank you for the post.

Clever blog from an even clever girl! I always enjoy your informative posts Julea and I'm a believer in that most people buy something because they liked it when they saw it in the store but many times once they get home they just don't see how it fits with what they already own. Redesigning is cool because the client gets to see what they already picked out in a way they really can enjoy now! And, it's environmentally friendly too!

The headlines in the "Local Life" section of our newspaper this morning reads "Retro Revival!" The article talks about the same things your mentioned, old is new and you do not have to spend a lot of money to incorporate new or old decorating items into the home.

The re-do on that chair is fabulous.  My daughter just bought her first home.  She is going to use a wing back chair we've had since the 50's.  It's gone thru 4 moves with me (weighs a ton), now it will get back into service.  She also re-did my old cocktail and sofa table from the 80's.  Like you point out, it's comfort furniture!

Great article. I always say it is better to use what you have and like than go out to buy more. You need a good plan though. I just reblogged your article and thanks for writing.

Mary Lou - Sounds beautiful - Do a post with Pictures! Karen - Thanks!! Terrie, Everything has changed - From home size to repurposing the great "bones" of our home. Plus if you have the good stuff, they sure don't build it like they use too, like Linda mentioned. It just gets an update. Nancy, I'm out in San Fran alot - tell a few of your friends and I'm just a puddle jump to you! Chris - Most of us oldies, started in the redesign field and then added staging - It's kind of like the chicken and the egg story.

This is very creative and a great explanation of the redesign process. I always stress to clients I want to try and use what they have. I'm actually in the process of taking a sewing class, learning more about reupholstering and just thinking of creative ways of solving problems.
