Septic Systems Need to be Maintained
As real estate agents, we know that the septic tank and fields get inspected when a buyer has an accepted offer. This is a fairly simple procedure, and hopefully all will go well. If things are not in a healthy state, this is one of those hidden (meaning it isn't seen every day) HUGE expenses that will shock a seller, or make a deal collapse if the seller cannot or will not remediate the problem.
There are some very simple solutions to maintaining septic health. Obviously, do not flush things that should not be there in the tank. Toys, and other non-dissolving items are not good. If perchance an item like that should make it to the entrance to the septic fields, that could be a diaster.
The most wonderful thing for your septic tank is any cultured item in your refrigerator. It reintroduces, or enhances the bacteria level in the tank. Yogurt, cottage cheese, or any other item that has a cultured base is very healthy for the tank. When you finish a yogurt, just wash out the container so the remains go down the drain.
Do not ever put bleach or other bacteria killers down the drain!!! How can bacteria (the healthy thing in your tank) survive if you kill it every other day?
Pumping out your tank every year or two will definitely keep the solid waste from clogging the tank and seeping into the fields. Find out when you have it pumped if you should do it more often that once every three years.....
