Well, after about 2 weeks of rainy weather in Tacoma, WA, the sun finally came out last weekend. Now I know what you’re thinking, “it rains all the time in Seattle.” Our winters are a lot of rain and drizzle, but summer brings nice weather, so to have a couple weeks of rain was wearing on us. To celebrate we thought we’d take the kids out somewhere fun. We decided on the zoo, and had a hard time getting a map and directions, so I figured I’d post them.
We planned a trip to the Point Defiance Zoo, and got discount tickets by going to the Point Defiance Zoo Website, and getting a family pass for only $87 not the $107 that is the normal membership price. The site also has a great map, and directions which I’m including here. The Point Defiance Zoo isn’t overly big, which is kind of nice really. Some zoos are so large that a day isn’t enough to see everything, and then at the end you are so tired from walking it almost takes the fun out of the visit.

Although not overly large the animal exhibits are excellent and you kind of feel really close to the animals. It has a very personal feel, and the Point Defiance Zoo staff is courteous, helpful, friendly, and always willing to give out directions even to the ice cream vendor. We saw a male Tiger, who is the dad of some new baby Tigers, not much cuter, up close and personal. The tigers are in the Asian Forest Sanctuary.

We brought our lunch and laid out on the Point Defiance Zoo’s gorgeous lawn for some turkey sandwiches and then meandered our way past some seal, walrus, and other cool creatures only to stumble upon the polar bears. As we approached the viewing window, one of the large male bears made a bee line for us. I think he was after my son’s strawberry ice cream cone. This huge animal stood before us sniffing, and then it raised and stood up showing us its massive height. Truly impressive.

It was a great and fun day at the Zoo. If you are ever in the Tacoma, WA area first get in touch with me to buy or sell a home, then make it a priority to stop by the Point Defiance Zoo, it’s a hidden gem of a place that will fill your heart with joy, and create some memories to last a lifetime.
