Contra Costa County 4H

The Contra Costa County Fair Antioch California was held this past weekend.  As the Contra Costa County 4HHorse Resource Leader, it was my responsibility to manage the final leg of the 4H County Fair Horse Show.  The first half of the County Fair Horse Show was completed two weeks ago at Brentwood Oaks Equestrian Center in Brentwood, where 4H members in Contra Costa County, ranging in age from 9 to 18, brought and showed their horse projects in the riding portion of the Fair Show.

On the first weekend in June, the 4H kids showed their project horses "in hand" in an event called "Showmanship" or "Halter", at the Contra Costa County Fairgrounds, in Antioch, CA.  All told, there were over 266 total entries (horses) and about 43 kids participating in the two events.  Kids winning a class in these two events can qualify to be invited to participate in the State level at the Best of the Best Horse Show in Sacramento.  Contra Costa County has more than 20 kids who have qualified to attend that prestigious even! Congratulations to them all!

The weather held for us both days.  There were no injuries (yeah!) and everyone seemed to have a great time!  We were given lots of wonderful dontated prizes from local long-time supporters of the 4H progam, including B&B Ranch in Brentwood, Horsetown Tack, This N That Tack, Brentwood Feed, Concord Feed, Western Saddlery and many individuals who donated funds to purchase additional prizes for the kids.

 Schweller Properties

A big thank you to Schweller Properties for their Sponsorship of a Tee at the 4H Golf Benefit on May 15, 2010.  Due to recent budget cuts, Contra Costa County has slashed their funding to the 4H Youth Development Program.  With that said, the Golf Benefit is a critical fundraiser in keeping the Contra Costa County 4H program alive!  Check out other community events that Schweller Properties is involved in by going to www.SchwellerProperties.com

I have been involved in the 4H Youth Development Program for the last 4 years with my granddaughter, and find this program to be a great one to help develop our young people into members of society that anyone will appreciate and enjoy!  The program is part of the University of California Extension, and is designed to develop leaders of our young people.  The 4H year runs from September through June each year.  Come check us out at www.ca4h.org
