Sign of the times?  Today while at Fashion Valley Shopping Center in San Diego, I was surprised and disappointed to see thatSaks Fifth Avenue Closing in Fashion Valley Saks Fifth Avenue is going out of business here in San Diego.  Years ago when I was in college there was a Saks Fifth Avenue on Girard Avenue in La Jolla, along with an I. Saks Fifth Avenue Closing in Fashion ValleyThe salespeople told me that Saks has closed all their San Diego locations, but we can still shop at the one in Orange County, California.  It seems like all the stores that I used to shop at are now gone or have merged with other larger chains... Robinsons, May Company, Broadway, Buffins, Walker Scott, I. Magnin, Joseph Magnin, Bullocks, Marshall Fields and others are now gone.

I am not saying that change is not a good thing, but there seemed to be so many more choices of stores years ago.  In the words of Bob Dylan, "The times they are a changin'"...

It definitely is a sign of the times.  I read where Saks is closing their Charleston, SC store as well.  Most of the companies that you mentioned now operate under the Macy's banner.

Like real estate, the landscape of retail is changing due to the new economy and the positive shift in consumer comfort level for shopping online. Interesting post on changes in your local area.

Thanks Rodney for your comment - yes, many have merged with Macy's!

Emily, thanks for the comment and I agree that there is a shift into shopping online and probably will continue to impact the neighborhood stores.

Michael, I was very surprised today seeing Saks closing, but always look forward to shopping up in your area!   Susan
