This is my story of Cereal Fest 2010, and the Quest for Sugar Bear...
The Cereal Fest 2010 in Battle Creek afforded beautiful weather for all who attended. If you have never been to this part of the country in June, is well worth checking out the Cereal Fest. Where else in the world for one time a year can you eat breakfast with ten thousand other cereal loving people?
The main supporters of this annual event are Kellogg, Post and Ralston Foods Cereal companies, which all have their factories right here in Battle Creek. Literally tons of cereal is donated to Cereal Fest every year, and kids and adults get to come and eat as much cereal as they desire.
Cereal Fest is also a chance for you to meet famous individuals like ‘Snap, Crackle & Pop', ‘Toucan Sam', 'Dig'em Frog', ‘Sugar Bear' and none other than ‘Tony the Tiger'. There were even the Keebler Elves walking around, since Keebler was purchased by Kellogg a few years ago, they have joined the ranks at Cereal Fest.
My adventure this year with Cereal Fest 2010 in Battle Creek was taken along with my little brother whom I am matched with through the Battle Creek Big Brothers & Sisters program. When I asked Lorenzo upon arriving at Cereal Fest if he wanted to take a picture with Tony the Tiger, he said "No! I want to get a picture with Sugar Bear! My mom works at Post!"
Knowing I had crossed a delicate line, I proceeded to help him search for Sugar Bear. I could probably call this post ‘Searching for Sugar Bear' as an appropriate header, as that is what we did for 2 hours going back and forth through the crowd, but the elusive Sugar Bear was nowhere to be found! We searched high and low all over Cereal Fest!
In our quest we got to see snakes and turtles brought out by Binder Park Zoo. We even got intoduced to an alligator, which Lorenzo got to hold. Cool! There were mascots from all the Battle Creek sports teams, and also local politicians walking around handing out flyers and wearing T-Shirts for the next election. Still, our quest through out Cereal Fest was yielding no Sugar Bear.
Lorenzo got a tattoo for answering a question correctly at a booth. He also got to get his face painted by a clown. Later we even played some tennis, and entered a contest to win a bicycle. Still, despite all the fun we were having, the ever pressing question hung in the air... Where was Sugar Bear?
As our quest continued, as you can see, we made several friends. We met Toucan Sam (The Toucan Sam! Mr. Fruit Loops himself!), and 'Dig'em the Frog', a Keebler Elf, a very, very large cow, and 'Snap, Crackle & Pop', yet still we were asking: Where was Sugar Bear?
Finally I asked Lorenzo, "Where do you think he is?" and he responded "Sugar Bear's shirt was smelly, and that is why he is not here." Assuming he must have been the expert on this matter, I went along with his logic. One learns to not question their little brother on such important matters.
However, approximately fifteen minutes later looking over the heads of people in the crowd, who did I spot? That's right! Sugar Bear himself! I immediately reasoned that Sugar Bear must have overcome his odorous T-Shirt problem for him to make a public appearance. When I consulted Lorenzo on this, he replied "Yes, he changed his shirt!" Simple.
So I am pleased to announce that my quest for Sugar Bear at Cereal Fest 2010 ended successfully, there was relief, and all is well in Battle Creek, the Cereal City!
