One of the great things about small towns and suburbs is the corner market.  This is usually a Mom-and-Pop Shop that has everything you need so you don't have to drive 25 miles for a gallon of milk.

Over the years Circle K's and 7-11's have replaced these unique shops into 24-hour marts.  They have been lost to the cities for years, yet they still survive in areas that are still in dire need of them.

Just look at any small town across America, you will find them.  Usually the clerk behind the counter knows the names and pedigrees of every person who walks through their doors.  Sure, Milk is 4 dollars a gallon, but with gas near 3.00 a gallon it makes more sense than driving a hour for it!

These little stores are hodge-podges of everything. On one shelf alone you will find cat food, ranch dressing, diapers, Pork n Beans, and fishing bait.  Most of them I have seen also have a Deli, or Meat Counter, or just a place where they can make a great tasting lunch for the locals.  There are no McDonalds or Taco Bells anywhere close by.

Thankfully most have changed with the ways of the times and installed debit and credit card machines.  But even two years ago many did not.  Cash or Check ONLY.  And a check only if you were "local" or at least related to someone local.  Yes, that's from my own experience.

So here is to the hard working Mom's and Pop's keeping the Country Stores and Corner Markets alive for those of us who decide to live outside the city limits. I will be highlighting my favorites in Localism in the future.  I want to take pictures of each and every one of them and celebrate them for their hard work.

Hear, hear!  I live in the country outside a small (as in tiny) town and we have our local grocery store which fits your description to a "t".  With a tri-lingual owner/clerk for full service for every customer of our little rural community.

Lexa, I love the corner store!!!  Where else can you get auto parts, the odds and ends you forgot from your grocery shopping, fill up your tank, get lunch behind the deli, and in some places you can get a prescription filled while you wait!!  LOL I am cracking up over here!!  I love the corner store!!! Did I say that already??

Lexa, I grew up working in a mom and pop store. That's where my heart will always be. The superstores are nice, but they just don't have the same atmosphere.

Tricia, You know that clerk knows your name and your parents too :)

Kimberly, You know I love it too!  I almost forgot the auto parts ;) Wal-Mart will never have the same flair as the corner market.

Leon, The atmosphere is great in those stores.  You're not pressured to buy anything, you can spend 20 minutes in the three isles just soaking in everything that is there.  A local store where we used to live is up for sale and I almost want to dump life here and go run it.  Imagine the stories you heard working in one!

Wow....$4.00 for milk?  I could only wish!  It's $5 to $6 here.   but back to the corner market, yes they seem to get phased out as towns grow.  I grew up in The Baltimore/DC/Annapolis Metro Area...and there is no such thing as a mom and pop store!

Now, I have a house in a small town called Henderson, NC  & I regularly go to a small coffee shop in Oxford, NC because of the fact that there is no starbucks....but they thrive because there is no other options.... (Thank God I go back to MD weekly)

Then we have a family vac. house in A teeny tiny town that if you blink you miss it in West Virginia  - There is a store across from our house that has been their forever, its the only place left they have!  You can do your quick grocery shopping, deli, coffee, hunting stuff, bait, and you can even play the 3 slot machines that they have!  Oh and they have gas and air pumps too!   One of a Kind...
