Efforts to make the Huntsville Area Safer Increase

policeI have been out a lot this week viewing Huntsville homes for sale in our area and it seems everywhere I go there are police everywhere...all over the place.  So I found out today that there is a new campaign in our area called "Take Back Our Highways."  I also found out that Alabama's traffic fatality rate has reached its highest since 1973.  This campaign came out of an effort to make the roads safer.  So that is why the police are out so much now.

Starting on the 13th, the effort will intensify as 200 more state troopers are added to the roads to help.  There are some things they will really be watching and attempting to reduce:

  • Speeding
  • Driving Under the Influence
  • Following too Closely
  • Failure to Yield Right-of-Way
  • Driver Inattentionpolice

I would hope that just by knowing that the traffic fatality rate has reached a high would make drivers want to be more careful and cautious on the roads.  However, I think that maybe a movement like this may be what it takes to help make our roads safer.  I want to encourage you all to be careful, cautious, and alert while driving so we can get those rates back down!!

Kimberly, we have a main street that is watched closely on a regular basis.  You would think that people would get the idea and slow down! NOPE!  They have an officer sit in the middle in a lawn chair sometimes, and several cars waiting further down the road to pull them over!

Kimberly - Hopefully this campaign will have an impact and lower the traffic accidents. I know after they installed traffic cameras here the intersections where they are installed have had a MAJOR reductions in accidents, red light running and speeding.

I really hope that this campaign will have the intended effect that was intended.  Its very scary for someone that drives as much as I do that traffic fatalities are the highest they have been in almost 25 years.  I hope more people will be cautious...especially with our kids returning to school this week.
