This is a short post to tell you about a neat tool my friend Ken showed me this week. Walk Score is a website that shows you the "walkability" of a particular neighborhood. It runs off Google Maps and shows you visually where certain types of business are located, which would be a great asset for a relocating client or to help you write ad copy for your listings ("within walking distance to 18 restaurants and 4 parks!")

Regular readers know I love my neighborhood of Fremont in Seattle, Washington. My neighborhood has a score of 91 on the walkability meter, which is a big reason why I have only filled my gas tank 6 times this year. I can walk everywhere!

According to the site, this is how to interpret your score:

 • 90 - 100 = Walkers' Paradise: Most errands can be accomplished on foot and many people get by without owning a car.
 • 70 - 90 = Very Walkable: It's possible to get by without owning a car.
 • 50 - 70 = Some Walkable Locations: Some stores and amenities are within walking distance, but many everyday trips still require a bike, public transportation, or car.
 • 25 - 50 = Not Walkable: Only a few destinations are within easy walking range. For most errands, driving or public transportation is a must.
 • 0 - 25 = Driving Only: Virtually no neighborhood destinations within walking range. You can walk from your house to your car!

Having previously worked at Adobe in Fremont, your neighborhood is definitely a walker's paradise! You should walk down to my listing at 3401 Wallingford Ave. N. and sell it for me! :-)

Yet another excellent Seattle neighborhood. Being steps from the park, Lake Union and the Burke-Gilman trail, you don't need me to help you sell. That's a great location!

Neat site. Some of the business it is showing are no longer there and several of the mileage's is off but still nice for showing the parks and library. It show a movie-plex that is 5 miles away as walkable! My favorite is the adult video store listed under bookstores!

Betsy, I love these kinds of posts. I'm hoping Naples will be a great score. I'm always walking around here. There's three distinct areas here that are inducive to bipedaling.

I believe that walk score is cool, but nowadays more and more people prefer to drive cars. Homes are often located in an area where some establishments are easier to get to by car than on foot. I've recently found a type of service on drivescore.fizber.com which is called Drive Score. It shows a map of what establishments are in your neighborhood and calculates a Drive Score based on the number of places within a convenient driving distance. It doesn't mean that drive score is better than walk score - they are equal and both necessary in the modern world!

I think that we should take into consideration both - walk score and drive score.
I agree, walk score is very good. But are many people travelling now on foot? Practically all families have cars, and practically everyone moves in a car.
All my friends have cars, all members of my family have cars, I have a car. We very seldom go on foot.
We live in the century of high speeds. We are always in a hurry. Do we really have time for walking? Probably, it is time to invent something new, something more actual? For example, drive score.
Walk score is still actual. But more actual, to my mind, is drivescore. You should also pay attention to it.
