Why Haven't You Written a Squidoo Lens Yet?

By

Squidoo is a great site for self promotion. If you have never heard about Squidoo, you should go and check it out. It's free. The site was created by internet guru Seth Godin, whom I'm sure most of you will have heard of.

There's numerous ways to bolster your internet presence, some more effective than others, and I would rate this platform very highly in that regard. Many of us have blogs and many of us blog for different reasons, but I'm sure first and foremost we are all trying to call attention to ourselves and our services.

With Squidoo you can create a "lens" which is a fancy word for a web page. What I like about these lenses is that they are simple to create and there are lots of options. What differentiates a lens from a regular blog post is that they are far more comprehensive (up to 10,000 words), they can be changed from time to time to keep them fresh, and you can add different "modules" to them to make them more dynamic. Some of the different modules are links to Amazon products, links to videos, links to a charity of your choice, and for those of us in the SEO game, links to your own websites. Since Squidoo is indexed numerous times every day by the search engines, these links will be found very quickly. (We can never have enough relevant links to our sites).

I would imagine that it would be an excellent forum for home stagers to showcase their talents and write an instructional article about the different aspects of the trade. The lenses look good and make the authors seem to appear as experts in that field. Real Estate agents could write a lens about a specific locale, or area of expertise. (I wrote a lens about waterfront properties since I seem to dealing in a few of them). Home inspectors could go to town on all the different issues that they come across. Real estate lawyers could too. Unlike a daily blog, it's something you would do once and then check in on it every now and then to see how it's doing, sort of like a child who is old enough to look after himself. Low maintenance.

squidoo

Not just for business though, if you happen to have any passions or hobbies, you can write a lens about those. I just read an excellent lens about how to grow little avocado trees from the pits that I normally throw away. The fellow who wrote it really knew what he was talking about. Good stuff.  I thnk Squidoo could be a valuable weapon in everybody's online arsenal.

Hi Malcolm:

I have never heard of Squidoo either until now.  I am already surfing and lurking around on the website.  Thanks for the tip.

Malcolm,

I have bookmarked this post. Actually, I do have a number of post that would be 10,000 words.

Like Chris, I had never heard of it before.

Chris Smith Prudential Ronan Realty Chris, there are a ton of forums on the net, and it can get overwhelming trying to stay on top of everything. I have cut back on a lot of net activity lately and am just sticking with the high page rank, oft indexed fora. Squidoo is one of the keepers. At the very least, it's a high page rank link to your website.

Catherine Polan (Re/Max (Belleville and Trenton) Quinte Ltd. Brokerage) You're welcome Cathy. I think you'll find it a useful resource, and what makes it good is that it's not all that time consuming at all (after you have finished the initial lens - which takes a bit of effort).

Brian Madigan LL.B. (Royal LePage Innovators Realty, Broker) Brian, I actually did think of you while writing this blog. Some of the subject matter that you write about is very complex and demands a much higher word count than the average blog. It's also very intricate stuff that would really help the general public when they have legal questions about real estate. Squidoo lenses do very well in search engine searches.

Malcolm Johnston (Remax Trent Valley, Trenton, Ontario):  This is a very considerate post, Malcolm.  I was going to mention the high page ranking benefit, but I see you included that within your comment to Brian.

In addition, there is another benefit within Squidoo.  You can make income, either through affiliate marketing or through Amazon's version of Google AdSense.  Squidoo has a neat feature that you can decide if you want to give all, some, or none of your lens-driven income to a charity.  They make that very easy.

As an aside, you might want to consider HubPages, too.  This is similarly structured as Squidoo.  While there are a ton of these things that sort of copy each other, it seems like HubPages has fewer lenses but more visits per lens.  It ranks pretty highly, too.

Chris Wechner (Section 8 Pros) Hubpages are good too Chris, as is "propeller". The trick is to find the places that have good pagerank and stick to those, and not waste time with numerous blogs that the search engines won't find. It's too easy to get carried away like a kid in a candy store with all the free platforms, but truly, most of them have little impact.

Malcolm:  I hadn't heard of "Propeller," but I looked on their site, and I see that they have a Page Rank of 8, which is massive, especially considering that I hadn't heard of them.

However, I really could figure out WHAT the site really is.  At the very quick glance at it that I took, it seems like it's just another version of eBay.  I suspect that I missed a more important piece of it.

I'll have to revisit it.  Thanks for the suggestion.

Jo-Anne Smith- Oakville, Burlington and Mississauga Region Real Estate, Ont (Brekland Realty Group) It doesn't take much effort to keep a lens fresh Jo, you should dust it off a little.

Chris Wechner (Section 8 Pros) Chris, pr8 is nothing to sneeze at, that's why I'm sticking with Propeller too.

Liz Moras ~Chilliwack Realtor, Chilliwack, Hope, Langley, Abbotsford (Harrison Hot Springs, Cultus Lake) Seth is one interesting fellow Liz, he's had quite a few great ideas.

Al and Peggy Cunningham, Brokers Voted Best Real Estate People Brampton (RE/MAX Realty Services Inc. Buying or Selling) Hi Al and Peggy, that indeed is the dilemna. There is way too much crap out there, so it's good to find the things that work and leave the rest behind.
