Thank the feds! Citizens can work out for free in Des Moines high schools all this summer and possibly into the fall. The reason is that upgrades to high school workout rooms were completed with federal grant dollars and one of the stipulations for receiving them was that the public have access to the facilities.
The grant of $480,000 dollars was spread equally across all schools for equipment such as new wieght and cardio machines. Some of the machines cost as much as $3,500 a piece, a sum that would have been unheard of without the grant. Public access actually began this winter, but the fact has not been well publicized.
The public use times for the summer are as follows:
Roosevelt High School 4419 Center St. 6-11am weekdays and 7 to 8:30pm M-Th.
North High School 501 Holcomb Ave. 9-12 Mon-Sat.
Lincoln High School 2600 S.W. 9th St. 7:30-11:30am weekdays.
Hoover High School 4800 Aurora Ave. 3-4pm M-W-F.
East High School 815 E. 13th St. 9-11am Saturday
So if you've cancelled your gym memebrship to cut costs, or you just think you'd like to get a bit more exercise you can work out in style in a Des Moines high school near you.
