Friday Fotos: DC's Chinatown

By

I took this during a quick downpour in DC's Chinatown.

Chinatown is a part of the city that has completely reinvented itself over the past ten or so years.  When I first moved to Washington back in the 1970's, it was full of wonderful funky restuarants, funny inport stores where you could buy a real wok, and falling down buildings.

Today, the falling down buildings are luxury condominiums, many with innovative materials and styling.  The Chinese restaurants are a lot less funky and there are lots of new cuisines joining them.  And the funny import stores?  There are still a few around, and I was able to find a real wok recently - not one of those flat bottomed Teflon numbers.

Here is a sampling of some of the downtown DC condos currently for sale.  If you would like help buying one, please call or text me (202-549-5167) or email me at housepat@mac.com

This looks very much like the entrance to Philadelphia's Chinatown!  We used to go there every Mother's Day and it's a huge place to go when you are young on date night!  Thanks for bringing back great memories.

WOW! That is a great shot with so much color and life. The shapes and the energy of the street scene combine to make me take a deep breath and smile.

Hey, guys!  Thank you for your comments.  This was a fun one to take.  And just in case you were wondering, I was stopped at a red light, camera on the passenger seat - very handy!

Hi Pat... In my DC days (mid-80's), Chinatown was not a very safe neighborhood.  It sure looks and sounds like that has changed.  And that's nice to see.

The rain really made all the colors stand out in the shot!  It's great!  While I am happy that Chinatown is most likely safer (according to a commenter) I am still sad to see the flavor of the old fade away.  To me the funkiness, the ecletic shops, etc is what is so exciting about Chinatown, regardless of the city, but, I guess that's just me!

Patricia, beautiful shot.  Don't you get those mixed emotions about the funky giving way to the revitalized? Where do the small funky shops go when the rents go up?

Nice photo of DC Chinatown's arch Pat.  I remember when they were putting the arch up many years ago and thinking what the heck is that?  Today I absolutely love it and stop to admire it whenever I walk the neighborhood.

Is that a picture of you at Raincamp in DC?
