With summer in full bloom right now, it's time to take a walk through Balboa Park to see the flowers, which also are in full bloom.

Balboa Park, San Diego, California

Balboa Park had its beginnings in 1835 when California was still under control of Mexico. New San Diego City officials set aside 47,000 acres of land for recreational purposes. Part of that acreage is now Balboa Park, making it one of the oldest areas in the country dedicated to public recreation.

Balboa Park, San Diego, California

Koalas at the San Diego ZooWith over 1,200 acres, Balboa Park is the nation's largest urban cultural park. Just some of the many attractions in Balboa Park

  • World-famous San Diego Zoo
  • 15 major museums
  • Several performing arts venues, including the Starlight Bowl amphitheatre and a full-scale replica of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre
  • Spreckels Organ, the world's largest outdoor organ
  • 9 public gardens, including one of the nation's largest rose gardens
  • The San Diego Model Railroad Museum, featuring the nation's largest model railroad
  • Sports venues for golf, baseball, tennis, archery, swimming, disc golf, horseshoes, volleyball, and lawn bowling

Many of the buildings in Balboa Park were originally built for the 1915-1916 Panama-California Exposition and the 1935-36 California Pacific International Exposition.

Part of the joy of Balboa Park, though, is that it's open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, is safe at night, and is a joy to simply walk, jog, or ride through.

Today, we'll just take a short walk around the Lily Pond in front of the Botanical Building via a 29-picture slide show. Hope you enjoy it, and if you need a place to call home so that you can visit Balboa Park year round, please call me and I'll help you find that special place for you to call home.

Hello Jim - Thanks for the walk down memory lane.  I became a Marine in San Diego and was able to visit several times a year for about 10 years after boot camp.  Balboa park is one of my favorites.

Hey, everyone.

Sorry it's taken me a little while to get back to this blog post of mine. Summer's in full swing and between real estate, chamber music, and Borders, I'm working like a dog I guess you could say.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting. I'll be by your blogs to do some reading and commenting. Like they say, "Do unto others as they have already done unto you."

If there are any questions or comments that need specific answers or acknowledgment, I'll do that in separate comments below this one.

Again, thanks for stopping by and commenting.
