Think you know who your friends are? Guess again. If you've ever had a knee jerk reaction to someone you've met for the very first time, one that sets your teeth on edge like the screeching sound of chalk scraping on a blackboard, you know what I'm talking about. It's instant enmity. No warm and fuzzies here, no feeling I think we'll be friends. You can't stand this person and are amazed that ten seconds ago you didn't even know he or she existed. It's only happened to me a few times in my life, but it's been unnerving each time. I wanted to like them and castigated myself for such an uncharitable thought.
In my past, the pit of my stomach feeling usually proved to be dead on. The people I reacted so strongly to turned out to be not nice, usually self serving and just plain irritating . . . except for one. That guy turned out to be one of my best friends, the one I could turn to under the most difficult of circumstances. He was the one who stood by me when times were tough. He gave me a shoulder to cry on and a hand to rely on when I felt the road I was on led absolutely nowhere.
I couldn't help thinking about it today because we spent time together. Part of it was work related, the rest strictly personal. He is my brother from another mother, my voice of reason when all reason is gone. For that I salute him. And I say to you, if you find yourself feeling that discordant vibe in your own world, take a step back and reserve judgment, for you, just like I could be wrong.
