Geo Tagging - Not Sure I Get It

By

Geo TaggingI have friends all over - and one of the things I'm finding very interesting is how many people ARE Geo-tagging everything... and how many people just AREN'T.

I mean - seriously... have you seen someone in NC posting that they are "checking in" at a listing? Well folks in Colorado are!

One friend recently said, " and have you seen where (so and so) has been lately?  They must be gaining 50 pounds!  I mean it's Biscutville, Bojangles, Krispy Kreme... OMG!"

So is it because it's a GAME, and you get BADGES? Or is there some Social "nod" associated with notifying folks that you frequent the Library, or your office, or Joe's Coffee shop.

I'm just not sure I get it.... I mean I totally get letting people know about "secret places" (Like the Flower Lady who lives in our town, and if you see a little tiny sign with flowers hanging out them she's selling flowers around back for $4 that would cost you $12 at a Florist!)... but is there VALUE in letting people know that you frequent Bisketville and Krispy Kreme??

I understand that there's some monitary inducements for resturants... so like if you're the Mayor of the local pub they might give you a free beer - but I don't think places here have caught on?

So is it a matter of educating business here to give out discounts??? I'm just not into Social Spamming... Is it really the next Twitter???

I haven't caught onto this either, yet.  I just started Facebook a year ago, and blogging a couple of months ago, so maybe I am behind.  Let's see if I catch up.

Some people definitely take it too far.  If you find something cool to share, tag it - but I don't need to know EVERYWHERE you went EVERY day!

For me, it's about being prudent.  I'm not sure it's wise to have everyone and anyone in the world knowing exactly where you are every minute of the day.  Just sayin'...

I do enjoy facebook and I just starting using twitter, but the geo mapping think is just a little too intrusive for me right now. But hey, people put their most intimate and embarassing moments on UTube, so who knows where things are going.

Maybe because I'm a single female - but I'm not too thrilled at the idea of everyone knowing my schedule.  It just gives me the creeps.

This is something I don't get either though maybe I'll understand more over time.  I don't necessarily want people to know where I am all the time.

4 square is something that people either love or hate. When people you know constantly update themselves on 4square when on lunch or coffee breaks occur..well those people I stop following. It is a good tool to use if you are in sales and you have meetings all over the city as your manager can follow exactly where you are or your pregnant wife knows how to find you if need be. I think those that use it to let the world knopw they spend more on dinner than you do...well those people have a little "unfollow" button next to their name for that very reason.

Eleanor - I think everyone said all the points to your post. Since it is social media, people use it without really thinking. Most of us use social media to promote businesses so we are trying to think of value added social media interaction. Others are just.... well socializing on the internet.

Eleanor - I haven't started using geo-tagging, like you, and apparantly many here, I am not sure of the benefits. I have heard some recommend 4 Square and I am looking into it.

With the advent of newer "smartphones" such as Android and iPhones (I use an HTC Incredible Android device) comes the inclusion of built-in GPS and other "location awareness" technology.  These geo tagging or "chache" applications invite app developers to created applications that didn't exsist before; much like a camera phone or text messaging.  In the nascent stages these features were novel for teenagers and the like but eventually moved into other demographs.  There may be a place for these apps in real estate but will take a more thought as to its usefullness.
