It’s official: Summer is here! As if we didn’t already know!

Starr's Mill in Fayetteville GAAt exactly 7:28 A.M. EDT the Earth’s position in its annual trek around the Sun relative to the tilt of its axis established the maximum amount of daylight hours for the Northern hemisphere!

One popular misconception is that the Earth is closer to the Sun in the Summer. Actually, the opposite is true, as the northern solstice more closely aligns with aphelion, when the Earth is most distant from the center of the Solar System.

Here in the south, we have been experiencing the heat of Summer for the last three weeks, with daily high temperatures in the 90’s. That’s really hot for early June, even for Newnan Georgia!

I can only imagine what July and August will be like!

Thanks for the explanation...guess what you are saying is "It's going to be hotter!" Enjoy it and the summer afternoon thunderstorms!

Richard, it has also been in the 90's here in Virginia. Sure beats shoveling snow. Thanks for the info and have a great Summer!

Take ME back to the February blizzard, puhlease!!  We are having our famous swamplike August weather NOW...and it's no fun.  ;-)  From the sounds of it, quite a few of us are sweltering early this year....maybe we will have a respite in August.

It's been up to 106 here in Phoenix, but that's not as hot as 90 degrees in GA because of the humidity difference.

Snow Richard...You will have snow in August.  Why not?  The weather has been kind of upside down anyways.

I think Susan Haughton and I need to cool off over a happy hour.  I would rather do that than go back to the blizzard of February.  At least you don't have to shovel heat and humidity.

In Nashville, we have also been experiencing extremely warm temps for this time of year.  It would be nice to get a little break.  Like you, I'm worried what July and August will bring.

From here on out the days are getting shorter...hotter, but shorter (as far as daylight goes) They are still pretty consistently 24 hours long :-)

Must be time for me to go traveling. Here in Seattle we haven't had a day over 75 since early September, and that's a record. Most of our Spring has been wet and in the high 50's. Who needs that? So while many of you are experiencing what looks like a long hot summer, i fear ours will be short and wet. Still, I'd rather live here than where you are.

Richard, I hope it is a dry heat, followed by a nice breeze, but from my time in the south I know those wishes are not likely true. Happy Summer Solstice.

We're experiencing similar temperatures here in NC. but after the winter we just had, I'm not complaining. Of course if you ask me the same thing in August........

It was 96 degrees here on the coast of NC today with 100% humidity....I LOVE IT!!!!!  I am soaking it in and wishing I could bottle it up, just in case we have another miserably cold winter like this past one!

This is a great description of what is actually going on during the summer solstice and with a lovely photo as well.

Happy first day of summer!

Richard: Having been around the sun a few times myself, I still can't imagine temperatures in the 90's... Here in Seattle it was a whoppin' mid 60's, but for us northern folk, T-Shirt weather. The weather here has been nothing like what's predicted by the experts. To me, it's just weather. I remember cold and rainy June's... and I recall a few awesomely beautiful May - June weather in the mid 70's to 80's.

It remains interesting to me all these years later that Summer doesn't mean the sun is closest. I love the seasons though and that's one reason I love the Northwest so much. Winters mild most of the time, yet the temperature, mood, and ambiance of the season's are here. Have a great summer season and enjoy.
