Aggressive Homeless A Problem In Ocean Beach, California.

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Crescent Moon Realty, Inc. & Land N Sea Auctions.

In the many years that I have lived in the San Diego community which is 25+ we have had our challenges. Local city budget issues, Local city growth-plus the challenge of a changing economy, the newest is the challenge of the aggressive homeless person/group that is panhandling down in Ocean Beach. Characterize - by the following:

•·         Young

•·         Able body

•·         Rude

•·         Aggressive

•·         Travel in groups

•·         Brandishing weapons

•·         Unfriendly dogs. & the use of fowl language.

•·         Demanding money/change.

These young homeless are being willfully destructive and travel in pacts, and maliciously destroying shop owners property and assaulting potential customers.  These transients known as "travelers",   move from city to city.   For them homeless is a lifestyle choice.

San Diego police are aware of this growing problem. Local shop owners have resorted to displaying stickers in their shop windows that say "Welcome to Ocean Beach, Please don't feed our bums". Shop owners say that ignoring them is especially hard when they gather in large numbers along popular tourist attractions locations.

I lived in Pacific Beach for a little while so I can understand why the homeless choose to live there: simply put THE WEATHER!  What is great for the residents makes it also great if you are living outside.  The homeless population is something that needs to be addressed:  Helping the homeless understand that living on the streets is not the best option for a healthy future in our society.  I get it that it's a choice for some but they need to understand it's not a very good decision.

In our city, Mobile Loaves and Fishes is making an effort, to construct a homeless rv park near the airport, taking many of the homeless out of our downtown. The city council is involved as well.

Not saying it will end our homeless problem, but certainly a smart step in the right direction.

L or L ~  This is the first I've heard of this situation.  We have a homeless problem here in Phoenix, especially during the winter months.  Is your City Council working on the issue?  Scott's comment sounds like a very interesting idea.  We Phoenicians truly understand the 'nice' weather San Diego offers.  Good luck and keep us undated.

Ken:

The City of Ocean Beach is trying to resolve this issue, unfortunately these "homeless" have become quite aggressive --- and are causing a problem with those interested in shopping in Ocean Beach.

Scott:

Good suggestion, we have several homeless out reach programs, it seems these individuals are resisting these programs help, and want money, not food etc.

Kellie:

Yes, the weather here is magnet, and Pacific Beach/Ocean Beach, is a great place to live. The challenge is that you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink. These individuals seem to enjoy the intimidation factor.

Rich:

Pepper spray could be the solution, it just the herd mentality that one has to deal with. Thanks for stopping by.

It has a intimation factor. Many of the shop keepers are getting the brunt of this negative behavior which makes it financial scary also.

Being born and raised in ocean Beach and a native since 1963 this type of behavior has and always will be a factor in OB.   The shop owners are generally transplants catering and turning Ocean beach into a tourist trap.  OB was once a great place with mom and pop stores on newport street.  Once the tourist shops started opening it was downhill since then.  Ocean Beach has always had its locals but to treat homeless people like a menance to society is questionable.  The do gooders who opened these so called trinkett stores should have done their research before cascading on a town which was a world within itself.  shame on u.  Dave

Dave:

It is sad that so many of the homeless, feel its necessary to behave badly in OB, the shop owners are not responsible for the fact the person is homeless, and the shop owners have a right to do business, why should a person that makes the choice to shop in OB be accosted by a maraudering band of homeless that do not have the common decency to be respectful of hard working individuals. With so many out reach program San Diego has it a shame that these individuals are not interested in taking advantage of any of them, instead they wish to harass the person that wished to shop in OB/PB.
