Building a Green Home in the Raleigh Area
The experts at award-winning Southern Energy Management (SEM) know all about solar water heaters. Solar water heaters are not required in a green-built home, but can be a great option. Some of the questions SEM answered during this special presentation at Stanton Homes during the 5th Annual Green Home Tour included:
- How much does a solar water heater cost?
- How does a solar water heater work?
- How is a solar water heater installed in a new home?
- How is a solar water heater installed in an existing home?
- What types of solar water heaters are commonly installed in the Raleigh area?

Are there even more types of alternative-power water heaters available?
Thanks for the solar water heating tips and info, Penny. GREEN is the way to go!
Great option that should be made mandatory! Great post!
Sounds like a good presentation. I am wondering if the question about costs included 'total cost of ownership' which would factor in the ongoing costs of operation. This is an important point and is easily confused by most clients.
Valerie - there are a variety of different products on the market. But you'll want to check track records, pricing, and maintanence before making a decision. We're focusing on solar and tankless water heaters as our most popularly requested options.
Mary - we hope to see the cost of solar continue to decrease. Right now the tax credits that are available for homeowners after purchase can make a big difference. Consult your tax professional to see exactly how much you can lower your overall cost by!
John - We recommend a personal session with Southern Energy Management. They are multiple industry award winners and really take care of their clients, including answering all these types of questions.
