Many of the builders in College Station, Texas are including a new feature, designed to save money and benefit the enviroment, the Tankless Water Heater.  The concept is simple, why heat 40 or 50 gallons of water twenty four hours a day, when you can have hot water on demand?

With Tankless Heaters, also known as Instantaneous or Demand Water Heaters, there is no storage tank.  You can employ electric or gas heating with tankless systems.  Hot water is dispensed at typically 2-5 gallons per minute.  Gas tends to be at the top of that range, where electric doesn't perform quite as well.  A whole house system is the type that you would typically want to employ, as smaller Tankless systems cannot provide for multiple uses simultaneously.  Another possibility is to install seperate Tankless Heaters for appliances or connect two or more together.  Seperate systems could be used with poolhouses, hot tubs, and remote bathrooms.

24%-34% more energy efficient with moderate use, and 8%-14% more efficient with high usage (over 80 gallons a day), better efficiency of 27%-50% can be achieved if Tankless Systems are installed at each hot water outlet.

Another benefit of the Tankless System is that heater life is typically extended.  A standard water heater can last anywhere from 7-15 years.  Most Tankless Systems have a life expectancy exceeding 20 years.  This ensures less scrap metal in the landfills.  Remember that periodic maintenance can extend the life and minimize efficiency loss.

When building a home, or replacing your conventional water heaters explore the option of Tankless Water Heaters.  Your wallet will thank you, and so will the planet!!!

Hi Chris, I'm not really familiar with the tankless water heater but your post is the second time I have heard about it in a two day period.  I guess I need to check it out.

There is a lot of buzz about these hot water heaters.  I have two of them in my house; one for hot water and the other for my radiant hot water heat system that heats my house.  They are so much better than keeping a big tank of water hot all the time and they take up much less room.  Mine is mounted on the  wall in a closet.  A great green post!

Stephanie, thanks for the kudos, coming from a Eco-friendly expert I value them highly!!!

Marcel, I always drool over their clean lines in a house and have found the clients that get them to be VERY happy.

Missy, I think they might work slightly better in our relatively balmy weather for a whole house, but others are chiming in with colder climates...

Paula, they are wonderful!  Gadgety enough for the geeks and conservative enough to warm everyones hearts!

Joanne, glad to hear from someone using them!!!

Ray, my husbands aunt and uncle live in Laredo, Paul Young, the car dealer....

Chris, Bryan and College Station real estate buyers would do well to contact you.  You're up on your stuff!  The tankless heaters are being offered in some of our own pre-construction.  They're efficient all around.  I actually saw one the other day during a property viewing...I could not believe how tiny it was.  It was in the closet and took up about 1/20th the space as a standard water heater.  Too cool.

Chris, I have never heard of tankless water heaters however, I am not sure if they would be safe in earthquake CA.

Thesa, it really is neat, isn't it?  Too cool, and too gadgety~

Ashley, thanks for stopping by!

Lynda, I would be honored if you linked to it!  Let's get the information out

Maggie, they are actually VERY attractive compared to water heaters, aren't they...

Tom, me too!  I'm already checking around though I have another 5 years probably.

Mana, lots of companies install them in California, check some of them out.

Terri, they are great according to my clients that have them.

Ray, we are the poor relatives :)

Jeff, thanks for stopping by!!!

Susie, according to the folks that have them, if they are installed properly it is an "endless" supply of hot water!

I have a tankless WH at my home, my office and at 3 of our rentals.  They can work well, but we encountered a LOT of issues when installing them. I have a web page up where I discuss some of the problems we have encountered, and how to avoid them. It also has a link to an OA Smith white paper on calculating the payback of tankless heaters:
