The cost of cigarettes will go up $1.60. On Long Island you are looking at $10.00 a pack. In Manhattan you will easily pay $12.00+ a pack.

What will it take to get you to quit smoking? Are you waiting for the Doctor to tell you? When that happens you will be handed a death sentence.

Look at the chart to the right. Look at all the chemicals that are in cigarettes and what they are normally used for. Don't even say it's only a little amount of each. These chemicals will KILL you.

Do you truly think you will not get a smoking related disease? Think again. Think about your family, your friends and your KIDS. Do you know what kind of hell you will put them through watching you die? What they will go through having to bury you? What they will go through not having you around every day not to mention birthdays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, graduations, weddings, births of grandchildren, etc. Look at what you will miss out on!

For those non-smokers, let me clear something up. Smoking is not a habit, it's an ADDICTION. A smoker acquires habits along the way with years of smoking like needing a cigarette with their first cup of coffee in the morning, after a meal, especially a Thanksgiving meal. Having a cigarette with an alcoholic beverage, getting in the car after a long day at the office and a long commute home. This is just a drop in the bucket but you get my points.

Smoking is an ADDICTION. Nicotine is a drug just like heroine and cocaine. I know this because I am still an addict even though I do not smoke anymore. The cravings can hit you like a ton of bricks and can throw you for a loop. They come out of nowhere. It's up to me to move through them in order to not smoke again. I know if I just have one drag of a cigarette, I am done for. I will go back to being an active smoker in the few seconds after it all hitting my brain. And, I will smoke more.

When a person quits cold turkey, they can turn into someone you won't recognize. Bitchy is the best word to describe it. During the first few days after quitting, the addict will go through the garbage and their car to see if there is a little somethin' something' to soothe the physical withdrawals they are going through. Sounds extreme right? Sounds like what a junkie would do. That is my point. Call it a junkie or addict. They are both the same. The only difference is drug addicts will turn to the streets to get their fix. A nicotine addict will turn to their local store to get theirs. Cigarette companies and each U.S. state are the Dealers.

You have to recognize that you are an ADDICT and always will be. There are some ex-smokers that quit without a problem. That is a very small group of people and most of us are not in that exclusive group. They are lucky since their brain receptors do not send a message which makes them want to smoke. We all wish we had that "problem".

With all the quit smoking aids out there, stop making excuses and quit smoking. Life is too short and smoking does make your life shorter. It ages you too. Are you waiting for your divorce to be over? Are you waiting for a stressful moment to pass? We all have stressors in our lives. You probably have smoked most of your life and do not know how to deal with stress without cigarettes. You feel like quitting smoking is losing a best friend. Been there. Those were my thoughts too. They are just excuses.

What makes me not go back to smoking? My son. When I have a craving, I think of my son standing in front of my casket saying, "why did you have to leave Mom?" "Why didn't you just quit?" "Didn't you love me enough?" This is always enough for me to say no. My heart breaks every time I visualize this.

Wow, $10.00 for a pack of cigs. That is a lot of money. 20 per pack so $.50 for each one. Maybe I should buy a few cases and store them to sell in the future like gold. $10.00 today, $20.00 5 years from now and double your money.

Jackie - My father passed away at age 62 from emphysema - he was a lifelong smoker and I begged him to stop when I was a kid.  I lost one of my best friends to throat cancer two years ago - he was a cigar smoker and he was only 49.  I can't believe how expensive cigarettes are these days, and I often wonder what the price would have to hit for more people to stop.

Wow! I can remember buying cigarettes when they were 35¢ a pack. I pitched them out the window when they reached 50¢. I am glad that I kicked the habit...
