Med. School In El Paso

Texas Tech University is trying to open a four-year medical school in El Paso Texas. Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center currently provides medical school education for the last two years of a four-year program. Students have to attend a school in Lubbock Texas there first two years. El Paso does not currently have a four-year program. This school would be a great benefit to our community. It would show how serious El Paso is on educating our youth and growing our health care system. In recent years we have had a shortage on doctors and specialists. Maybe some of these students will be encouraged to stay at local hospitals, or open their own private practice. Maybe the county will be able to get federal funding for research. I think the school can be nothing less than a benefit to our community.

The only real challenge right now is politics. Our state reps are using the funding issues for there own political agendas. The school was scheduled to open in 2008, but because of funding it might be pushed back until 2009 or later. Republican Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and the senate have passed the funding, but the Texas House of Representatives led by Tom Craddick, R-Midland have denied it. I don’t care about bickering of our state reps they need to sit down and take care of business like they should be doing. Years previously they couldn’t agree on school funding which almost resulted in schools not opening on time. Our state reps really need to get there stuff together cause they have the fate and future of our whole entire state in there hands.
