Tips for Wine Tasting in Temecula's Wine Country

Earlier today I posted an article “Temecula Wine County…Award-Winning Wineries and the place I call home.  I decided to follow up with some Wine Tasting tips.  Keep in mind that although Wine tasting can seem intimidating, it’s really just a way to relax and spend the day sampling many of the fine creations crafted by passionate local vintners.

Wine Bottle and Glasses

·        Eat a good breakfast before starting your day.  Remember to drink plenty Ariel Photo of South Coast Wineryof water throughout the day to stay hydrated.

·         Large parties (8 or more) may require reservations.

·         Usually tasting includes between three and six wines starting with lighter white wines through reds and finally dessert wines.

·         Write down some notes.  Wineries can offer up to twenty wines so you will have many choices to select from.  Making notes about each wine helps to decide which ones to bring home.

·         It’s a good idea to rinse your mouth (not with Listerine, LOL!) and glass to cleanse your palette throughout the tasting, but not necessarily after every wine.

·         Leave your perfume and cologne at home. This can ruin your palette, and the palette and experience of those around you.

·         Take your time when tasting each wine.  If you do not want to finish the rest of a wine, buckets are provided for spitting or dumping.

·         Don’t feel you need to sample every wine.  Just those that appeal to you.

·         Set a realistic number of wineries to visit in a day.  Four wineries in one day is typical and recommended.  This will allow you to learn something about each winery and sample a good selection.  It’s recommended to visit two wineries before lunch and two after lunch.

·         Drink responsibly!  Assign a designated driver.

·         If you over indulge, you will not be served.  Even if you’re not the designated driver…it’s the law!

Enough writing, let’s go taste some wine!
