Youngest Samba Dancer

Brazillian percussion instruments

When we lived in San Francisco and I was heavily involved in the music business, after retiring from Pan Am, I played in a Bateria over in the Mission District. A Bateria is the drum ensemble that performs for the dancers.

We would rehearse almost every week for a year preparing for the San Francisco Carnaval Parade. We rehearsed in a large dance studio, and the dancers rehearsed as we played. As Carnaval time got closer, the excitement grew and everyone began putting more energy and enthusiasm into the playing and dancing.

Samba DancerAfter the parade, a small group from the Bateria and dancers would perform in one of the very crowded night clubs, and it was a blast.

When I saw the video of the young girl learning the samba it reminded me of those days and the excitement and love the Brazilian dancers have for the music and dance.

1.  Watch the little girl video first.

2.  Next watch the second video of Maisa Duke performing on stage at the same night club where we performed. On that video you will understand what the little girl is emulating as she does her dance.

3.  Then watch the third video to see Maisa Duke and her dance ensemble perform in the San Francisco parade.

The Carnaval parade begins in the Mission District and ends up downtown San Francisco. Part of the fun is all of the interaction during the approximately one hour that everyone is lined up in their starting spots waiting for their turn to get in the parade line.

  4.  To get a real taste of the flavor of Brazillian music, the 4th video is Sergio Mendez showing how he went to Rio to do part of the recording on one of his albums with clips of the songs being recorded.

Hope you enjoy this as much as I enjoyed preparing these videos for you.

Hey Captain Bill - great collection of samba dance & music videos!  I love Sergio Mendes and know every one of his songs from Brazil 66!  My daughter and I have been invited to Brazil (Rio) for New Years this year and really looking forward to it!  Thanks for the post and looks like we will need to start practicing our Samba moves!   ((shake...shake))   :-)   Susan

The leader of the Bateria that I was with was the percusionist with Sergio Mendez at the time I was doing this. Sergio would give him a 10 minute segment in the show, and he was fantastic. I saw him perform with Sergio and then learned that he lived in San Francisco and he and his wife ran one of the samba school. His wife was the dance instructor and dancer, and he ran the percussion section.

All of the preparation and performing for the Carnaval was volunteer. However, he had a smaller group that peformed for corporate parties and they were paid.

So I joined his group and thoroughly enjoyed it.
