The Palouse, southeast Washington's vast, rolling hills, undulating sea of wheat, is spread out over 2 million acres of steep, rolling, treeless (for the most part) on dark soil. Other than selling trucks to farmers, my past experience leaves me a little naive to a true understanding of how special the Palouse is. The Palouse is visible from almost any spot between the Snake River and Spokane County, from the Palouse River border of Adams County in the west to Idaho in the east.
IT'S VAST, BEAUTIFUL and NEVER ENDING(at least that is according to our kids perspective as we are driving to Lewiston or Spokane). The Palouse soil holds water so well that farms can receive as little as a dozen inches of rain a year. Yet it is some of the best dry-land wheat yields in the world. Whitman County has been the top wheat-producing county in the country every year since 1978. According to some local farmers, the Palouse doubles the national average of bushels per acre.
Living on the Palouse is amazing, serene and peaceful. One community that maximizes Palouse living is Colton, WA. Colton is a small, charming, older farm town - a town that I always thought of as we drove to Lewiston or heard about in High School "B" sports.
