BP Oil Spill Updates

The Beaches along Florida's Emerald Coast (Panama City Beach, Destin, Ft. Walton, Navarre, Pensacola) remain relatively uneffected and open for business.  Please do not cancel your travel plans!  The only physical signs of oil we have had up to this point, are very small tar balls along the pack-sand near the water's edge.  Our sugar-white, soft sand beaches remain untouched.  Clean-up crews are out in full force on a daily/nightly basis making sure that our beaches stay clean of the oil from the BP Oil Spill.

While the physical damage to the beaches of Florida has remained in-check, the economic damage continues to take it's toll.  BP has placed a new containment cap on the leaking well as of this morning.  They are currently in the process of closing individual valves, one at a time, to be certain that the cap will not blow once completely sealed-off.  The success of this new cap will be measurable within the next 24-36 hours.  While we are all optimistic that BP has finally devised a solution to stop the leaking oil, we are not so certain as to the reparations that will be paid to local businessmen and their lost opportunities.  Please play your role of helping those of us along the Gulf Coast by not cancelling your travel plans, and please spread the word that our beaches are still open and as beautiful as ever.

The effects of the BP Oil Spill remain at a minimal level for the beaches of Destin, South Walton, and Panama City Beach.  While we have seen an increase in the amount of tar balls that are washing on our shores, it has remained at a manageable level.  BP Clean-Up crews and local municipalities are doing a phenomenal job of cleaning up the tar balls as soon as they wash-up on shore.  At this time, we have no reports of oil plumes or sheen that is visible along our coastline.  All 15 communities in South Walton County remain open for your enjoyment.  However, Hurrican Alex has caused turbulent ocean conditions and red flags are flying to warn beachgoers of the rip-currents.  Luckily, as of right now, weather is a bigger problem for our local beaches than oil.  Let's hope and pray the BP gets this leak contained and we can finally be confident that the worst is over.
