Since the new Elephant Odyssey opened at the San Diego Zoo last year, the old Hoof Mesa has been half empty with just the giraffes and the rhinos there.

Recently, though, they've refurbished some of the older pens. One is now a new flamingo lagoon, giving the Zoo two such lagoons. Others hold a kangaroo and a Mediterranean miniature donkey, both new to the Zoo, and a fourth one is a new Ambassador pen.

In the Ambassador pen, you can see any of the many animals that are taken to schools, conventions, and other meetings as official Ambassadors of the San Diego Zoo. You never know on any specific day what might be in the Ambassador pen, but recently I found the Zoo's Cheetah Ambassador:

Cheetah at the San Diego Zoo

Cheetah at the San Diego Zoo

Cheetah at the San Diego Zoo

However, something just wasn't right because in the same pen with our cheetah was this:

Cheetah dog at the San Diego Zoo

Cheetah and cheetah dog at the San Diego Zoo

Our lovely dog and cheetah grew up together. They think they are siblings, and they are inseparable. Where one goes, the other goes.

Good evening Russel,

These photo's are amazing..considering these breeds are not suppose to get along it's hard to see them in such close proximity to each other.

Russell...Cats & Dogs really have hard times establishing turf in the domestic realm; perhaps these two  can be ambassadors of " If they don't know they should fight, then they won't fight"  Hum, that did NOT work in our Home with our Beagle-Basset & our 4 cats.  Perhaps we missed the boat on acclimating their 'wild-sides' to the domestic home.  Whatever, those are great photos.  Do you think that the Cat wonders why his / her playmate has zero spots.    You always have great visuals to share.  Have a great weekend.
This ONLY took place this one time & ONLY because Bruno was asleep when Princess snuck into the bed.

NO Way!  I had no idea you had a spotted kitty too!  I can't believe they 'live' together!  There's just something wrong about that but, I just can't put my claw finger on it!

Russel, Holy Cats and Dogs! This is amazing. How did it come to be that they grew up together?

Russel,

I'm a cat lover too. We had a dog a few years ago and our cat had kittens. These kittens were raised by the dog. They didn't know they weren't supposed to wag their tails when they're HAPPY! So cute to see cats acting like dogs.

This is the kittens' mama, and she is my baby. I rescued Lucky from a sure death in the middle of nowhere. She sleeps on my neck. I can't believe she is 9 years old! I'm no photographer, but I think it's so adorable how she strikes a pose:

Hey, Bob and Carolin - I think people can do the same when they grow up together.

Hey, Dorie - I waited quite a while to get the two of them in the same picture, but the cheetah got quite excited when little children would walk by. Hmmm. Lunch?

Hey, Barb and Sal - I suspect Bruno and Princess are secret lovers, especially when you're not home. LOL

Hey, Silvia - You mean your week is over?

Hey, Kathy - I like your campaign. Glad I could contribute to it.

Hey, Debe - I love feel-good times like standing there and watching these two.

Hey, Kathleen - There was no Zoo keeper with these two, so there was no one to ask. The fact that these two were all by themselves with no Zoo keeper around also says a lot about how these two react to each other.

Hey, Lynda - Lucky is adorable. I had a black feral cat a couple of years ago but was unsuccessful at making her into an indoor cat.

Hi Russell,

I'm a bit late to the party here. LOVE Cheetahs. A lifetime ago, when I worked at Lion Country Safari outside of Atlanta, we had an ambassador cheetah named Hero. The coolest thing is to have a draping lapful of cheetah...they are the only "big cat" that purrs. Make that PURRRRRS.

Love 'em. Thanks for sharing...brings back fond memories.

Wow Russel,

Love that shot.  Our Abby cats are related to the Cheetah's!  What beautiful creatures, and like Kelly above stated, it is amazing what happens without filters or knee jerk reactions because of our engrained prejudices.  Thanks for that point...
