The San Diego Zoo has two hippopotamuses, the third largest land animal behind elephants and white rhinoceruses.

Unfortunately, hippopotamuses spend more time in the water than they do on land, which makes me wonder why they are land animals.

The Zoo has a great area for these magnificent creatures to roam swim, but getting pictures of them is difficult because you never see all of them, and the glare of the sun on the water makes it difficult to even get a useble picture to take to Photoshop. Never prevents me from trying.

And just to show you what cropping can do with these 18 MP pictures, here's that last picture cropped to just the eye and ear:

Looks like hippopotamuses have furry ears. Never would have thought that.

Great pictures.  When ever I see a Hippo all I can think of is the old Beverly Hillbillies show when Granny thought one was the worlds largest Hog.

Hey Russel,

Love the hippos, but although cute and rollie-pollie, they are extremely dangerous in the wild. HUgely "cool" critters on a hot day, and great photos!

Hi, Russel. Did you know that the word "hippopotamus" is a Greek word meaning "river horse?" I was a Classics major as an undergraduate and still have a head full of trivia.

I love the close ups!  Thanks for the great tip about the polarizing filter - I will have to purchase one for those really hot sunny days yet to come!

Russel,

I remember seeing the hippopotamuses through the glass at the San Diego zoo.   They sure do not stick their heads out much especially when it is sunny but you captured the moment for us.  I did not know that hippopotamuses had furry ears!  :)

You have a constant source of inspiration from the zoo. I have been there once during a RE/MAX Convention.

Russel,

Or shall I call you Cecil de Mille, quoting Sunset Blvd, "Mr. De Mille, I am ready for my close up" should be the caption under that close up of the hippo.  Love your dedication to photography.

Hey, everyone!

Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

I've been very busy, but today I'm trying to follow up on these older posts like this one to see if anyone had any questions or if I really need to respond to anyone's comments.

I will read all the comments and respond to any that need a response, but since this post is rather old, rather than making comments here in my post to each and every one of you, I'll just let everyone know that I have read all the comments and if there are any questions, I'll answer those in comments below this one. Otherwise I'll simply post this comment and then head over to your blogs soon to visit and do some reading and commenting. I hope you'll have a nice welcome mat out for me!

Don't forget to let your cat come out to play with all the other ActiveRain kitties. Your cat-friendly dogs can come, too!

If you need a great cat book, get yourself a copy of Peg Silloway's The Cat Lover's Book of Days.

Hope all is well with everyone.
