Moving to Cameron Parish, Louisiana? A brief introduction

Real Estate Agent with CENTURY 21 Mike D. Bono & Co.'s
Cameron is to the South of Cacasieu Parish and is part of Imperial Calcasieu. It falls within the Lake Charles MSA as well as the larger Lake Charles Jennings Combined Statistical area.

Cameron Parish is the largest insofar as land size of Louisiana's parishes and is located on the Gulf of Mexico. The parish coastline has not been impactedby the BP oil spill. Texas is Cameron's neighbor to the immediate West. Demographical information about Cameron can be found on WikiPedia. Wikipedia does not indicate why the parish was named for Simon Cameron, a rather unsavory Pennsylvania politician who served Lincoln as Secretary of State.

Residents and visitors enjoy rich hunting, fishing, boating, and wildlife, especially birding.

Creole Nature Trail Sign

Probably the best known tourist attractions of Cameron is the Creole Nature Trail, a designated and highly regarded All-American Road.  In fact, it was one of the first National Scenic Byways. Music lovers will appreciate the fact that Cajun musician, Doug Kershaw is a native of Cameron.

Cameron is blessed with several national wildlife refuges. Like the Creole Nature Trail, all should be visited when traveling this section of Southwest Louisiana!

Attractions such as the Sabine National Wildlife Refuge was the first one for my family to visit, but each of us have a preference of the Sabine Refuge, the Cameron Prairie National Wildlife Refuge, East Cove National Wildlife Refuge, or the Lacassine National Wildlife Refuge.

Despite being ravaged by hurricanes, especially the more recent storms, Hurricane's Rita and Ike, the area is coming back such that many homes and camps have been rebuilt or new ones built in their place.

Communities include:

  • Cameron (the Parish Seat)
  • Big Lake
  • Creole
  • Grand Chenier
  • Grand Lake
  • Holly Beach
  • Johnson Bayou

Big Lake, Holly Beach, and Johnson Bayou offer a variety of waterfront properties.

Schools in Cameron Parish are under the direction of the Cameron Parish School Board. Information about the library system can be found on the Cameron Parish Library main website.
