I love you America – I have tears in my eyes. World cup 2010

I just had a very intense emotional morning and I want to say thank you! Only in America. I am a huge soccer fan and I am German, today was the big match between England and Germany. I really did not want to watch it home alone so I called 3 other friends (one German, one French, one half American half German) we agreed to watch the game together and I was going to pick the place. I chose the Horse and Jockey pub in Pasadena (can’t get more British) When I arrive this morning one of my friends (in the full German jersey) was already standing outside and bitching at me (are you out of your mind? This is a British pub we will be the only Germans………..they are going to kill us if we win) Well, to me that was half of the fun, British people have a passion for soccer and they are great fans, loud and noisy and involved and that is what I needed this morning – passion and action and and and. Trust me I got it. It got pretty heated and the game was just beautiful. When the first goal for Germany was scored and I was jumping up and down even the last one of the 100 something British fans knew that there are 4 suicidal German fans in the crowd. Long story short. Germany won 4 to 1 which it should have been 4 to 2. This whole experience so far was pretty awesome already but what brought tears in my eyes was what happened next. A British fan walked up to our table and congratulated us, and started a conversation. Pretty soon there was the next British fan doing the same, the next one offered to buy us drinks, and on it goes. Never ever in a million years would this have happened in Germany or England. ONLY IN AMERICA! So, thank you America, you bring out the best in people. Of course I am still jumping up and down because the Germans will go to the next round but I have never seen a more gracious crowd than the English people in the Horse and Jockey Club today. Germany and England are the biggest rivals when it come to soccer and it can really get rough but this experience today was totally out of this world. My highest respect to the Horse and Jockey Club and the British fans !!!!!!!!!!! (I am not sure what I would have done if England had won)

Sounds like great fun and I agree only in America! The other day I had tears in my eyes too recalling the American spirit, days after Sept. 11 on the streets of NY. We are blessed!

Hi, Anne. What a GREAT story. I'm glad you had fun, and that your team won! The world has too many problems to be mad about the outcome of a game...sounds like the losers were good sports!

Leslie - I could not agree more. In-fact at half time we had the discussion that it would be a great idea to solve our problems with a soccer match not a war...........

Hello Anne, I'm here via Al & Peggy's little nudge.  That was a great story and I'm so happy for you that things turned out the way they did.  Some things happen here in America that I'm not always proud of but then something like this happens that reminds me that, yes, a lot of great souls live here.

And thanks to Al & Peggy for sending members here.

Anne - What a fabulous story!   I am very proud to be an American, and must say that I never think twice about whether i would go over and congratulate some fans of the winning team..   Maybe because we are such a melting pot, we always realize that there is another side, and they are usually sitting next to us.   Don't have that so much in Europe....

Anne, what a great story and a happy ending for your team. If nor for Al & Peggy Cunningham I too would have missed it. The world does look to the USA whenever there is a 'situation', and we do a lot that does not get noticed, so being seen for doing something good is always appreciated.

As for the drinks from the British Boys, however, never underestimate the power of an attractive woman in the presence of men and alcohol

Al and Peggy it was an awesome experience, specially with all the dramas and fights going on around us on a daily base. It really showed sportsmanship at it's best.

PS. Thank you for "nudging people"

Nick I nearly did not write the post because I thought that worlds just could not describe the situation and the feeling I got. I hardly use the word "pround" in my life but this time I am proud of America, the English and German fans.

Sharon, you have every right to be proud of the English fans. I wish the referee had given them the other goal - because it really was a goal.

Ed, thanks for your compliment but trust me this time was NOT the usual combination of women men and alcohol. It was the spirit of the people. I just found out the the guy was actually the owner of the Horse and Jockey Club offering drinks for our table.
