Our Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Ducks!

Feeding Our Gang of Visiting Ducks

For about the last 5-6 years each spring and through the summer we have our mallard families visiting for breakfast lunch and dinner.  Their menu is very consistent -- crushed corn.  If the corn isn't there when they arrive they wait until we notice them and come to greet us as we go to get the corn.

Tonight there was a family of nine!  The Park has a pond right down from us where they spend a lot of time and we enjoy feeding them in the woods.  Some times we'll see them waddle up and down the streets.  One year we got a special thanks when a momma duck brought her eight babies up to visit!  I had a picture but can't find it!  It was almost like she was telling them, "this is where you come to eat".

We also feed a few racoons, bunnies and possums which keeps them out of trouble for the rest of theRacoon neighborhood.  They seem to know to stay in the woods and not venture out into the neighborhood.  Our feeling is that they were here first and where are they supposed to go as we keep taking away their space.

In the fall and winter we don't get to see much of the more nocturnal creatures but in the late spring and summer the female racoon's come out in early evening -- getting away from the kids!

We enjoy living next door to these woods and getting to share in seeing a lot of the inhabitants.  Even a huge snapping turtle one spring making it's way from its winter home back to the pond.

We do have some mallards that visit our pond behind the house but they do not stay. I have tried to bribe them with corn but then the Canadian geese come. I quit feeding them because I do not want these birds around...

Sue:  I could not think of anything more fun... than watching these adorable creatures either eating their dinner, or waiting for you to bring it to them.  So, who has who trained, huh ?

Also... what mother raccoon cannot wait to get out of the house and away from the kids for awhile ?  Very, very cute.

We have a returning flock at the property next door....we call them "the GIRLS" when we HEAR them arrive....For the first time in years, I have rabbits in my yard.  I'm not sure what they area eating * my plants are limited to lillies and vinca * they are enjoyable to watch and don't scare the hummingbirds!

Hi Sue, It's nice to be able to be near wildlife and your park sounds like it provides quite a few animals for you to enjoy.  I bet they appreciate the Sue & Robin cafe'  :>)

Hi Michael, fortunately we don't get the Canadian Geese.  They can leave a mess which we experienced when we lived in West Virginia.  The ducks just seema apprciative, anyway that's what I like to think.

Karen, it is great fun and pleasurable watching the critters.  We (hubby and I) almost had an issue with a neighbor re the mama racoons coming out in the day time.  She alledged she had called the wild life office and been told that if they were seen during daylight they were probably ill and should be eliminated!!  I believe I straightened/corrected that issue pretty quickly.  Thanks for your great comment.

Wallace don't you just love the bunnies!  We feed them as well and currently we see the young out playing and hopping about with each other.

Hi Mary -- it is so neat being able to live so close to town and everything and yet have the woods butt up against your yard.  Actually this cafe is Marvin and Sue's.  Robin and hubby have a bunch of acreage and even more wildlife I'm sure.  Marvin and I are too close to town and much wildlife has already been removed.
