So now that you live in Denver or are about to - you have come to the realization that there is so much to do, what should you choose. If you are looking for a weekend getaway in the summer, I suggest trying Grand Lake Colorado. Located near Granby, and just a ways past Winter Park, and at the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park and the famous Trail Ridge Road. Grand Lake has become one of my families favorite spots in Colorado.
Usually when we stay in Grand Lake, we rent a cabin at Lemmon Lodge, however it is very popular and you really need to book about 1 year or so in advance. The Lemmon Lodge is located right on the beach of Grand Lake, next to the marina and in walking distance of downtown Grand Lake with all its quaint shops and restaurants. Its comfy, cozy, and everything you could possibly want to do is at your doorstep.
When we visit Grand Lake, we spend our days hiking, fishing, boating, exploring, and relaxing. We generally purchase an annual National Park pass, as we frequent the different National Parks often enough that it is worth it. This makes getting in & out of Rocky Mountain National Park a breeze as well. There is an amazing amount of wildlife that can be seen, the last time we were there we saw at least 4 Moose at different times. One was even at the Lemmon Lodge once. We see deer on almost every hike. Our evenings are spent dinning casually in town, or on our porch - whatever the mood strikes us. And then we generally can find a camp fire to roast marshmallows and make smores.
If snowmobiling is your thing, Grand lake is the place to be in the winter. The town becomes a snowmobilers haven and although I have never been there at that time of year, it is on my list of things to do.
If you asked my children what is their favorite place we go to for a getaway from Denver, I feel pretty confident they would say Grand Lake. I feel the same way.
