"It's a Wonderful Life" -- PARALLEL UNIVERSE VERSION . . . The Tragedy of Bailey's Borrowers.
Here is some fabulous food for thought from Carla in Portland:
We've all watched the Frank Capra classic, starring Jimmy Stewart: "It's a Wonderful Life".
And each and every time we watch it, we get all warm and fuzzy inside.
People are GOOD!! Bankers really care. No one gets Foreclosed on.
"Why, why . . . that money is in your house, and yours . . ."
Remember when the forthright, honest George Bailey was trying to convince his depositors NOT to TAKE ALL THEIR MONEY OUT OF HIS BUILDING & LOAN! 'Cause if they did . . . that would be a run on the bank, and life wouldn't be so wonderful for Bailey's Building & Loan.
Welcome to the PARALLEL UNIVERSE of "It's a Wonderful Life."
"Why, Why . . . that money is in your house, and yours . . . oh wait a minute. It's not yours anymore. They foreclosed on you?? Why, why . . . "
Why indeed!
Can't be happening. This is AMERICA. It's a "wonderful life" . . . COME ON!! Bankers wouldn't do that to their . . . depositors . . .
. . . Or, would they??
Remember the scene when the bumbling, fumbling Uncle Billy "loses" the deposit. In reality it's STOLEN by Potter. Henry "Paulson" Potter steals the DEPOSITORS' MONEY. And, Potter goes a step further and files embezzlement charges against George Bailey!!
Let's freeze frame that scene. The deposit being made WASN'T GEORGE BAILEY'S personal deposit. It was payments he was "servicing" from the loans he made to borrowers that used Bailey's B&L.
Henry Potter STOLE THE MONEY with purpose, intent and malice when he saw a loop hole. He didn't care how that money got into his greedy, little hands -- only that it did.
The persona of Mr. Henry F."Paulson" Potter:
Throughout the entire film, Mr. Potter is heartless, cold, apathetic, and downright evil. Everything that Mr. Potter does in the film is motivated by money. Be it "saving" George Bailey's clients during a bank run or offering George the job of his dreams, all are thinly veiled plots to fill his own wallet.
Though he is also a mill owner, banker and slumlord, Mr. Potter is a businessman at heart. If there's one thing he's talented at besides making people's lives miserable, it's his ability to manage, plan, and keep order. During the length of the film he seems particularly deft in the ways of finance and business, much to the chagrin of the good people of Bedford Falls. His business propositions may seem fair, even charitable at first, but his ulterior motives are of a far more sinister nature. Thus, he will stop at nothing so long as it means more money in his coffer and the downfall of the Bailey Building & Loan.
In his first appearance in the film, he is seen being transported in a decorative horse and buggy, which causes the Angel 2nd Class Clarence Odbody (who is researching George's life) to ask "Who is that, a king?", to which his superior, Joseph answers "No, that is Henry Potter, the richest and meanest man in the county!" [cited: Mr. Potter]
In my parallel universe . . . Banksters ARE getting away with what Henry Potter TRIED TO in the movie -- turning the tables, stacking the deck -- accusing/blaming the honest man (George Bailey) and stealing from the borrowers, ready to pounce and FORECLOSE.
In my parallel universe, everyone sees what's going on as plain as the nose on their face . . . but no one does anything.
There is no one protecting George Bailey. There is no one protecting the borrowers/depositors of Bailey's B&L. There is no one making honest, decent loans based on Bailey's Building & Loans "business model." Loans are based on Henry Potter's model.
In my parallel universe, the Banksters ARE denying loan mods, short sales . . . and going after Bailey's Borrowers . . . and FORECLOSING! Because Henry Potter was allowed to thrive, to grow . . . as his persona was unchecked and unbalanced.
And to top it all off . . . in my parallel universe, the Banksters ARE the largest holders of individual DEPOSITERS' income.
Can you imagine if that were TRUE?!? That the TOP FIVE BANKS have over 30% of deposits?!?
And just imagine that these TOP FIVE BANKS are all aligned with Henry Potter's business model. They ARE the ones stalling short sales, loan mods AND getting the BAILOUTS at TAXPAYERS' EXPENSE -- AND they have almost 40% market share . . . i.e., the despositers' money!
Whew, glad I'm only living in pretend PARALLEL UNIVERSE. None of this is REALLY happening. Our government would NEVER allow Henry Potter to manipulate, or gain the upper hand. NEVER!!
Because there's no such thing as speculation, or manipulations, and Henry Potter is only a movie character, and Banksters don't exist, and no one would deliberately STEAL the borrowers deposits just because dumb ass Uncle Billy couldn't keep track of the money, and Banksters would never deliberately stall short sales, or loan mods, and force people into foreclosures . . . it's a WONDERFUL LIFE . . . after all!
Now, just where did I put my rosy colored glasses?!?
