Dog Walkers Needed!!!

Volunteers are needed to walk dogs at the Putnam Animal Relief Center located in Winfield, behind Winfield Middle School.

I used to be a stay at home Mom, and when the kids went back to school I wanted to give something back to my community in the form of volunteering before going back to work.  I chose to help at the shelter because I care about the animals, I just can’t help loving them all. One day a week I walked the dogs and photographed all the animals to put on their website.

It’s a hard job.  You have to be able to go in and just love them while they’re there.  Don’t ask about your favorites next week if they aren’t there, just assume they found a happy home with a big fenced yard.  You’ll need to be able to think like a dog, enjoy the moment while you’re in it and don’t worry about the future.

You’ll learn confidence.  When you can walk into a cage with a strange dog that outweighs you, shut the door behind you, leash him and then remain in control – there is very little in the rest of your life that can intimidate you.

You’ll have an EXCELLENT exercise program.  Walking up and down a hill with a dog providing resistance is quite a workout!  Make sure you’re in somewhat decent shape, but you’ll be in better form after a few weeks.

It will do your heart good.  Helping the animals just because they’re there is incredibly rewarding.  Some of these dogs have been abused.  My first week there I walked a beagle who had cigarette burns all over his ears.  It hurt so bad to see that, but getting that dog to wag his tail and play with me was one of the best feelings ever

If you’d like to talk about becoming a volunteer, please call the Humane Society at 562-0300 or Mike and Terrie Miske at 586-7530.

Sarah -- As an animal lover, I sometimes wonder how shelter volunteers cope with the heartbreak ... and there it is, you said it so beautifully:  "You'll need to be able to think like a dog, enjoy the moment while you're in it and don't worry about the future".

Steve - Thank you, very much.  :o)

Cheryl - That's the trick to it.  You also have to remember that you can't save them all, but saving ONE means the world to the one you saved.

I can see you hugging and kissing all the animals....and crying as well. I won't do that....I get emotionally involved. We went to a pet store yesterday and I wanted to take all the puppies home...and then I saw the bunnies. They were the poofiest little dwarfs and soooo soft. You do a great service Sarah...wouldn't expect anything less.

Sally - I did some crying there, too.  Mostly smiling.  It is worthwhile, and I keep feeling drawn to go back and volunteer again.  I just don't know if my schedule will let me!
