People Make Houses Look Ugly!

While I'm driving around Cape Cod this weekend for our little mini vacation, I had an epiphany - People make houses look ugly! From traditional Cape Cods to grand Victorian style homes, people have gone in and personalized their homes for the worst!

Here are some tips to help get your home ready for sale.

When you're looking to sell your home you need to think "what would buyers like?". Maybe you should review some home style magazines or watch some home makeover shows to see what's in right now. Wall paper is so out! I see it way to much and hear buyers complaining about it 99.9% of the time. No one wants to deal with removing the wallpaper and having to repaint. To give your home a fresh look, paint all of the rooms neutral or warm tones that are inviting and help enlarge the room's appearance.

De-clutter! Don't leave your junk lying around everywhere! It may seem like an obvious, common sense rule of thumb, but you'd be shocked at how many homes we tour and see junk lying around. If you don't have the closet space, get rid of some stuff! Put it in storage, do whatever you have to do to make your home seem clean and open.

Take down your family photos that are sprinkled throughout your house. It's a distraction and buyers are too busy looking at your kid at soccer practice rather than picturing their stuff in the home. They can't get a good idea if they are unable to view the home as their own. Clean off the refrigerator and take down posters in your kid's rooms. There's nothing worse than bikini posters plastered all over a teen boy's room!

Do some minor landscaping to help dress up your curb appeal. Keeping your lawn manicured and mowed will help attract more sign calls and help to not turn away drive by buyers. Trim down hedges and overgrown bushes that may be taking over your yard. Try planting some pretty perennials if you have it in your budget. They will be welcoming and help portray a more home-like feeling.

Baking is always a wonderful thing to do before a showing or open house. When we bought our house the seller had just baked an apple pie. Home baked cookies work well, too. Put on all of your lights and open up curtains to let through the natural lighting.  Sweet smells and good lighting go a long way.

If you need more help getting your home "pretty" to sell, give JCKC Realty a call and we'll be happy to help!

Many time, by adding "personality" to a home, the owners detract from the appearance and value. Good advice, thanks!

Nothing like brownie in the can smell not kitty litter galore odor to help make a postive impression. Wishing you had a head cold when showing is not a good situation if you leave the place bringing the smell of the property with you. Or see lots of fleas and are banned from going back in to your own home, office until you strip, fumigate.

LOL @ Andrew!  Yes, how could I forget those stinky kitty litter boxes?

Less is definitely more in selling a home!  I'm dreading the day that I have to get my house ready for sale with 4 small kids...we're going to need some storage or a dumpster for sure!

Kathleen - great advice to would be sellers.  Amazing what deoderizing, decluttering, and a little paint will do.
