ICE - In Case of Emergency.

Recently there have been a number of posts reminding us to be vigilant when dealing with strangers - something inherent in our business. The suggestions in them have been on target and I hope all are informing others of their itineraries.ICE Incase of Emergency Cell Phone Contacts can save your life!!

Unfortunately, no matter how much we plan, the unexpected still happens. Whether on the job or just going to the grocery store, the unthinkable can happen. A collision, a heart attack, a diabetic episode or a fall all take only a little time and can leave us unable to speak for ourselves.

YES - "it" can happen to any of us!

If "it" happened to you, would emergency personnel know who to contact for vital, perhaps life saving, information? How would your loved ones be notified?

Even if you have a condition that warrants wearing an identification bracelet or necklace, there may be more needed. The ICE (In Case of Emergency) program has been growing for years and is a simple way to provide you with a voice in the event you don't have one. As an EMT, I can vouch that we do look for it when the patient can't help us. Sometimes even when they can. It brings family and loved ones together for you in your time of need and, by selecting the right person(s), could even save your life.

It's as simple as programming a phone number of someone you can depend on into your cell phone - using a name beginning as ICE. It can helps to have a name too, but the important part is to start it with ICE.

  • ICE Carolyn.
  • ICE Mom & Dad.
  • ICE Bob.

ICE Incase of Emergency Cell Phone Contacts can save your life!!Obviously it is important to protect yourself as much as you can to prevent a problem in the first place. Picking the right person to speak for you in an emergency is easy insurance that your needs and wishes will be accommodated. Please let your contacts know they are on you list - and what you expect of them is they get a call. Should a call be made, it is always unexpected and your contact needs t obe able to maintain their composure - for you.

Thanks for reading.

Do you have ICE contacts in your cell phone?

Boy did I need ICE today. First I was harassed by a blog stalker. Then my parked car was hit by a car. Finally, I was out to dinner and my house alarm went off. Maybe its LUCK I need instead.

Ellen: It sounds like you had a day that will provide stories for years to come.  Just consider it to be a conversation rescuer during a dry spell while talking with someone.

Bruce Kunz (Veltri & Associates, Realtors, Howell, NJ):  I like the way ICE succinctly breaks down a really imporant point.  Most of us don't plan for emergencies and are entirely unprepared how to handle them when they surface.

I sort of like your suggestion to program "ICE" in front of different people's names.  It helps identify which people should be contacted.

A part of me wonders whether that makes it easier for identity thieves who steal your phone, though.  Even if this is true, do the benefits of the "ICE" label outweight this potential negative?

Very good post!

Ellen: You sure had a tough day!  I hope all futures ones are much better!

Dan: Thanks for stopping by!

Chris: In thinking about this raising identity theft chances, I would suggest that you chat with your ICE contacts ahead of time so they know what you expect them to say and do. There should be no reason to provide a SS number or even an address on that initial call. The ICE contact could call back the police department involved or even the hospital to mitigate that.  The big things to know are pertinent medications (ie: blood thinners, beta blockers) and medical issues that could immediately affect care.  For example, just finding out that someone is diabetic could be huge - many present like stroke victims - or that the person had cognitive issues prior to this incident! Thanks for your thoughts!

ICE is why there are certain States that my husband and I don't travel to because if something happened to either of us in those States, that State would not recognize any rights by the other person since we're a gay (California) married couple. I just hope the Supreme Court gets involved in my lifetime and forces all States to recognize the "full faith and credit" clause of the U.S. Constitution, just like they did for so many minority groups in the past. It's just a matter of time, but I really never dreamed that Iowa would have gay marriage before New York or California.

Jim, thank you again for leaving a comment., however I don't believe your rant is appropriate here.

The ICE concept has nothing to do with perceived problems with travel nor rights.  It is solely about the victim who cannot speak for themselves during a medical emergency.  Kind of like an ID bracelet for a condition, but so much more.
The In Case of Emergency contactis simply someone who I, as an EMT or police officer (who only cares about my patient's current emergent medical needs), can call to both help define and special patient needs. It will be up to the ICE contact to get "the ball rolling" as far as the patient's wishes for follow-up care.

Enjoy your 4th of July!!

Bruce

Bruce, thank you for this post.  Somehow I had missed the ICE program.  I'm going to get my cell phone right now and make use of it.
