Do you have an opinion? Then by all means voice it!

Hi folks. Lately I've read several posts about comments. How to comment, how to respond to comments and what to do when you get negative comments. Some of the posts I thought made valid points and some I thought were just foolishness. But hey everyone is entitled to their opinion. I'm not one to dish out rules and regulations as I believe we should be ourselves and write and comment how we choose. If you don't like the way I do things then please tell me about it or feel free to move on. I'm certainly not forcing anyone to read and comment on my posts.

OK, this is actually not what this post is about but it does kind of lead into the topic of this post. The topic of this post is comments. Not how to make them or when to respond to them but how much value they can add to a post if you give them time to germinate. When I write a post one of my goals is to create a discussion. I do this by asking questions, by writing about a topic but leaving out information or by writing about something controversial. The reason I do this is because I want to learn something. And the discussions that take place in the comments help me to do this. They give me a different way of looking at things or maybe some additional information that I didn't know or hadn't thought of.

Sometimes, my entire way of looking at a topic may change or I may have just been dead wrong in my thinking and some one was able to correct me by commenting. Either way it stimulates my thought process. And that is my main objective for writing.

So folks, what I want to do today is share some links to a few of my older posts. The posts that I have chosen are posts that generated tremendous discussion or had folks commenting that were very aggressive that I was able to turn around. And a few where we just had to agree to disagree and move forward. My point in sharing these past posts is to show you how a comment thread can evolve from being very negative or aggressive to ending in a very positive manner.

If you receive a comment you don't like or you feel is an attack don't be so quick to delete it. Think about it. Then try to change that person's way of thinking. Debate the topic. Try your best to turn them around. Who knows you may be the one that's wrong or maybe you'll learn something. If you have a strong opinion on something you should be able to defend it. If all you want is for people to agree with you then you are missing out on a great opportunity to grow. Remember opinions are NEVER right or wrong. They are just opinions.

So, if you want to see how commenting can expand your knowledge, then take some time and read through these posts. It won't be easy. Some of these have many, many comments and each comment could be a post of it's own. Also, the comments are much better than the posts. The posts were just a starting point. You'll see heated battles, total disagreements, anonymous posters, consumers weighing in and several other surprises. Who knows maybe you'll learn something. OK so here goes. I hope you enjoy the read. Might take a week to get through it all but it will be worth it I promise. Then come back and let me know what you think.

  • Let the Games Begin! This was a very strong debate between several members with me basically moderating the battle.
  • So, what do you do to justify your high commission? Folks, if you don't read any of the others, you need to read this one. This post is an AR classic on how to debate a topic. To get the full affect of how this came about you have to visit the first link in the post that will take you over to the bloodhound blog. I was very, very proud of the members of ActiveRain this day. To me this comment thread epitomizes what blogging is all about.
  • Compensation or Performance? Which one will it be? Another great comment thread. REALTORS®, the consumer and an Attorney debate this topic. You have to get about half way down to when Mark Nadel, the person who wrote a 75 page white paper study on this topic, chimed in.

OK that's it. I hope that in some small way this post will help you. As always, I appreciate each and every one of you that take the time to read what I write. Don't ever feel you have to agree with me. I'm a big boy and I can take it. I want to know your opinions and thoughts. So let me have them!

Graphic compliments of Jay Merton. I call it "Me and my big head" Others may call it "Broker Bryant is full of hot air". But hey, that's their opinion and they are entitled to it.

Some of the best comments are those that light my fuse and I have to take a deep breath before responding.  There was a really good one you missed though....what was that guy's name that was extremely caustic at first and ended up contributing so much to the topic?

Bryant, wasn't the consumer Stan scenario the most amazing thing! It was for me. You had the most amazing discussion with him, on two blogs! And then he became a regular part of your post; that shows both the experience and ability you have, and the amazing medium a blog can be.

I read the CB post a couple of months ago, starting at Bloodhound. the way the professionals here on AR responded was amazing.

I just read part 2 of the rebate issue......still not clear!

Thanks for bringing back some great ones and reminding us debate can be beneficial!

At one point I noticed that every time one particular person commented, it always ticked me off.  So I went back and deleted every last one of them :)  Once I saw a pattern that someone was just knocking me, and had no other reason to comment but to annoy the heck out of me, I just barred that person from commenting.  I've done that with one person on RCG as well.  Without a platform, mean and nasties can't flourish.

For the most part, comments are great.  But when a person is just enjoying being a pain in the neck...I hit them out of the park.  It's like kicking a heckler out of an audience and telling them not to bother coming back.

BB - Thank you for introducing a perspective that I had not considered.  I've always been aware that the comments can and frequently do have more weight than the original article.  It's also interesting to realize that through the comments, we are sometimes persuaded to see a new point of view from the original premise of our articles.  That's being open minded and willing to reason.  Exceelent approach not only to blogging but to business and life in general don't you think?

Hun, I love that tee shirt. How come you won't let me wear it?

Marlene, Always be willing to learn. An open mind will get you far in this business.

ARDELL, You're mean!!!! OK maybe not. Maybe it's just a control issue. Better yet.....maybe it's just you. And I LOVE you for it. I don't do boring. Never change.

Tom, Thanks for stopping by. Great comment.:)

Jeff, I have many more that stirred up the pot quite a bit. I've been losing my touch lately.

Paula, The CB post was an outstanding example of how we on AR can change the consumers perspective of what we do. I just love that comment thread.

Carole, Stan and I are still in contact. He turned into a friend of mine and I hope to meet him someday. It just shows the power of the Rain!

Ines, I'm not sure there have been so many. Are you thinking about Candybags? I thought our debate with Mark Nadel was excellent. I really enjoyed it.

Bob, Take the time to read through those post when you can. The comment threads are very very good. It shows I am much more than just a broker in drag:)

Broker Bryant-Great post...I can't agree with you more!  A difference of opinion is not a bad thing but can definitely open up the minds of many others.  I too have had my thoughts change based on comments that I have recieved.

The only time I delete is when the comments are irrelevent to the post and takes away from the content.  I have had this happen.

I love all of your posts and have learned so much from many people!  Your posts are worth re-reading.

BB,

You are a true blogger when you are able to cultivate discussion. It certainly not easy, but only through intense thought process are we able to create new ideas and concepts that are essential for the growth of our real estate industry.

P. S. I am with TLW: You can either agree with me or be wrong, your choice! ;-)

Another thought provocating post Broker Bryant.  I always welcome a diverse expr4ession of viewpoints. I have had negative comments n occasion and usually follow up with a "Thank you for adding to this lively discussion and exchange of ideas" remark.  It usually takes the sting out of it.   I think the written word is open to interpretation, and sometimes we may be misunderstood.  Keeping an open mind and being willing to consider other viewpoints is the best way to gain further knowledge.

And...if you make a mistake...admit it so you can move on.

Could life be any sweeter . . . a (com)passionate wife!

You are a lucky man.  Forty nine plus years of marital bliss and I can't get one ounce of compassion (or passion for that matter) out of mine.

Lucky man!

BB: I agree. Comments are the best part of a well-written post. It can be a little disappointing when answering a great comment containing a question—only to find later when checking back, the questioner did not return for the answer.

BB, I am gonna comment BEFORE I read all those posts because I think that it is gonna take a while. I'm sure my posts on comments were a couple of the ones you are talking about. I want comments. I don't delete them just because they don't agree with me. In fact I have only deleted one comment and that was because he was trying to sell something directly from my post. I let him come back and he added a link to his blog. It is still there, but that is still NOT COOL. Comment all you want, say whatever you want but don't place links in other people's posts unless invited. Hopefully that is not a controversial position.

And the conversation goes on!

Bill Roberts

P.S. you are real good about keeping the conversation alive by answering your comments. I wish everybody was as good as you.

Ed, 49 years? That's a long time my friend. And I'm sure there has been plenty of passion during all those years.

Bill, I've actually read the debate between John and you. That's the way it should be. Strong opinions are a good thing. It's how we learn. Or not:)

Jay, I'm sure I'm guilty of that on acassion. Hey remember some of us still have to work for a living:)

Ines, I hope you and Rick had a great day yesterday celebrating.
