PORT ARANSAS, Texas - Hurricane Alex made landfall in Mexico hundreds of miles from Mustang Island.  High surf, winds and heavy rain have come and gone.  The weather forecast calls for improving conditions through the weekend.

The July 4th Holiday is traditionally a big weekend on the island and this year promises to be no different.  As an added bonus four tall ships will be coming through the jetties Saturday morning as they make their way to former Naval Station Ingleside.  Details on the festivities can be found here.

At approximately "dark thirty" on Sunday night, the Annual Port Aransas Fireworks Display will take place over the harbor and ship channel.  This is always a great show and people return year after year to enjoy the waterfront show.

Even though the hurricane passed well to our south, some travelers altered their plans.  As a result, hotels and condos are reporting vacancies.  This is a rare opportunity for last minute travel plans as we celebrate in Port Aransas.

Correction:  The boats are coming in this afternoon...Alex changed their plans too.  There is a good crowd along the waterfront waiting to see them pass through the jetties.

Keith this is the first weekend in about eight years that we didn't make it to Rockport and Port A. We always enjoyed the fireworks. Our son sold his house at Rockport and we thought everything would have already been taken when we thought about making the trip. Maybe next year.

Sorry we missed ya.  We had a great crowd, despite the Alex scare earlier in the week.  I think the fireworks show was the best yet.
