While watching the US Open at Pebble Beach on Father's Day, I remembered the sense of satisfaction Dad had in playing it . He loved it both for the challenge and the beauty of the course.
But Asheville's mountain golfing challenge- the perfect blend of mountain vistas at 4,000 feet with golfing on the greenside - ranks right up there. Take Balsam Mountain Preserve's (see photo) course, for example.
"Balsam Mountain Preserve is one of the best mountain golf courses I have ever played," said Larry Rinker, PGA Tour veteran, and Champions Tour member.
" Arnold Palmer has created a masterpiece and the views and vistas are simple stunning."
HOMES ON THE GREENSIDE: Just as Balsam Mountain Preserve has set a new standard in private mountain living, the Arnold Palmer Signature Course("Arnie actively was involved in designing it!" one of the residents of a gorgeous eco-friendly home here reminded me) sets a new standard for mountain golf.
There's been a "green revolution" taking place on the golf courses where Audubon's Cooperative SanctuaryProgram (ACSP) for Golf Courses informs the best of them- including this spectacular Asheville area course!
Balsam Mountain's green golf course has, with the help of ACSP, had an environmental assessment including a wildlife inventory, water quality analysis, a check of vegetation, pesticides, water conservation. Here at Balsam Mountain Preserve, golf course managers and home owners( only 354 homesteads nestled into 4,400 acres) are thinking on the greenside.
