I Have Been MEME'd -- Five Things You Don't Know About Me

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Showcase Homes

I am a realtor in Royal Oak and fairly new to Active Rain and consider myself to be on the outskirts of the community and I have seen the Meme's a few times and figured it would be a while before anyone asked me that.  So I was a bit surprised when Jeff Belonger MEME'd Me.  Thanks Jeff for taking the time to investigate who is new - a great way to bring a sense of belonging for those of us new to the community--although it was difficult to think of the five things.  I had the passing thought that maybe it is better to live on the outskirts - but then I am a member of the introvert group.  So here are five things you don't know about me. . .

1.  Truck with bouncing boxI was part owner in an air freight trucking company.  Basically what this means is that I drove an 18 ft. Mack straight truck. I was being trained to drive a tractor trailer when we dissolved the business.  I drove the tractor trailer long enough to knock a mirror off the side of the truck and bang into something on someone's dock.  However, I really got good at directions and it really helps finding my way around Oakland County & Wayne County.  I have the east/west - north/south way of describing things and know never to stop behind a truck at a light etc. if I want to get a fast start.  I also always blink my lights to let a truck know it is OK to pull into a lane when driving - particularly on the expressway.  I did get a lot of looks (and a lot of help) being a woman truck driver with long blonde hair.

Pencil writing on tablet2.  I have written a book of poems but have only had one poem published.  My undergraduate degree was in English with an emphasis on creative writing and one day my goal is to write a novel.  The rest of the dream is to have it made into a move and I will insist on cowiting the screen play and then it will be nominated for an academy award--I love movies and the academy awards and faithfully watch them every year.  This way, I will get to attend.

3.  I have been a strict vegetarian for over 30 years.  I eat dairy off and on but no meat, fish, poultry or eggs.

4.  I have a great interest in Eastern religion, philosophy and meditation and have traveled to India five times.

Penguing waiter5.  When I moved to Metro Detroit, I was a waitress at the Renaissance Center in the revolving restaurant previously known as the Summit for over 16 years before I took a managment postion in Human Resources.  Then I went back to college and got a Master's degree in Adult Learning & Performance Technology.  I am always surprised that being a Realtor is my favorite profession.  However, I am not surprised that truck driving and waitressing was not my favorite!

Cathy, interesting meme ! I really enjoyed learning more about you and also wanted to say welcome to ActiveRain .

I've been a vegetarian for approx. 16 years, although I did find a need for more protein after 13 years so began to eat wild salmon and eggs a few times a week.  Do you eat a lot of tofu to get around this issue? If you have any favourite recipes, please pass them my way (I'm allergic to dairy and wheat products). One of my favourites is Pad Thai made with rice noodles.

You've had a very interesting career path ! Good luck with writing a novel and screenplay one day. Something tells me you are going to be successful in this endeavour.

Cathy....   I agree with Missy in regards to truck driving. In regards to how much you like real estate as opposed to truck driving and waitressing,.... there can be many reasons for this. How long have you been in real estate?  In any case, thanks for sharing this, I enjoyed this.

Cathy,

Thanks for linking me to this!  You are now up and running on my alphabetical meme list!

Isn't driving a Mack truck the coolest?  Lots of power!

Jo-Anne:

Thanks for commenting and telling me more about yourself.  As regards protein - I read something once that said after our body reaches its stature, we don't need as much protein as we think.  If we continue to eat the same amount, the body uses the excess to age us.  It kind of makes sense when you think of it.  I never worry about it as all foods have some protein and excess protien makes the body acidic and hard on the kidneys.  I eat a fair of amount of lentil soup but don't eat much tofu.  I just read an article the other day that says soy is not really good unless it is fermented like miso.  I eat dairy and wheat off and on but I think I have a mild allergy to it as well.  I don't use recipes much - I was trained by a someone from India so I use individual spices that exist in curry powder and make a lot of soups and just keep seasoning until I like the taste.  Thanks for saying that you think I will be successful as a writer - it's always there even if the time has not yet come.

Gary:  It does seem like an odd combination of career choices - and definitely writing material when I do write that book.

Missy:  Thanks Missy - that was a very cute way of putting it.  While I didn't feel like Barbie when I had to take my dolly and unload a truck, it did have it's advantages being a woman with long blonde hair - when you don't see very many woman driving trucks - a lot of second looks.

Jeff:  In October, I will have been a Realtor for three years.  Your question implys that there will be a time when I don't feel this way.  I have been getting quite a bit busier as I grow my career and have had many overwhelming days lately and a couple difficult deals.  I think what I like most is being my own boss and the flexibility of my schedule--and I am rarely bored.

Lucky:  I loved driving the Mack truck.  Climbing in with this big macinery around me did feel powerful--not to mention being on top of all the traffic.  I still miss not being able to see everything ahead of me--particularly in a traffic jam.

Lisa:  I know someone in New Delhi so I always start there.  I have traveled north and west but never to Mumbai or southern India etc.  I have been to the Taj Mahal and on my last trip we went on a camel safari somewhat near Pakistan--I forget the name.  Once I went to the foothills of the Himalayas and could see them in the background.  My favorite was a place called Tenakpur on the Sharda River near Nepal (probably spelled all those incorrectly)--I had a fantasy of retiring there and writing my book.

Cathy,

Very interesting. Things we never knew about you:)  I worked for a Trucking Company for 13 years and my husband drove the 18 wheelers. Also waitressed in many places, but have never been to India! Real Estate is my favorite profession also...wish I started earlier. p.s. You and Jo anne and I could have some extremely interesting conversations

Karen:  WOW - we have a lot in common - I now have learned some things about you by sharing about myself - funny how that works.  When the time is right, we start things and sometimes we don't know why it is when it is - it does seem funny that all of a sudden I am now a Realtor when my sister did it for so long (it was partyly because of her that I became one)--just thankful I like it so much.  Thanks for stopping by.
