It's just so easy to say Happy FOURTH of July, but it's largely unknown that the legal separation of the original 13 colonies in the Americas from Great Britain, was on July the SECOND, 1776.

A resolution of independence by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia was voted and approved by the Second Continental Congress on July 2, 1776.

After voting for independence, the Congress started to turn out the Declaration that would explain the decision, prepared by a committee of five (Roger Sherman, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams & Robert Livingston), with Thomas Jefferson as the principle author.  Congress debated and revised the declaration until arriving at it's current form, and approving it on July 4th, 1776.

John Adams wrote to his wife, Abigail:

"The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more."

He was off by 2 days.  From the beginning American decided to celebrate on the fourth, the date of the much-publicized Declaration, rather than the date that independence was actually approved in a much less publicized, closed session of Congress.  The myth that the Declaration of Independence was signed on the fourth, was so enduring and established, that even John Adams and Thomas Jefferson (who had each signed the declaration), decades afterward came to believe that they had indeed signed it on the fourth.

So... happy 2nd of July!!

As Realtors® we know that nothing matters until it is agreed upon in writing.  So I guess the Declaration of Independence was the written manifestation of the vote.  Neat tidbit of history that I would not have known.  And I'm glad to know it was a Virginian that started this fine move toward independence.

Chris - Virginia is know for starting lots of stuff...

Dedra - maybe we should just start on the second, and finish up on the fourth.

Alan, you just reminded me that the Second of July is my little sister's birthday!  I gotta quit blogging and call her!

Well there you go.  And what to signers of the Declaration of Independence both died on July 4th of the same year?

Patricia - well, what are you waiting for...

Pat - that would be Adams and Jefferson (the same year, meaning 1826... not 1776) ... kismet, no? (I almost added that in to the end of my post, but thought it might be a little "off-topic".)

Well that is a little piece of history that I never knew!  Very interesting story.  The 4th still has a little better ring to it though.

Team Honeycutt - always fun to learn something new, isn't it?

Michael - Oh... I think we could have picked any date, and repeat it for 200-some odd years, and it would sound right... how about Çinco de Mayo??  (just means 5th of May, and yet it sounds right).

Another fact I learned today and never knew. I was also surprised to see several patriotic presidents, reporters, and historians who miraculously died on July 4th. Coincidence?

OK, the next thing you are going to spring on us is that January 1st isn't actually the first day of each year.  Well now I'm just going to have to celebrate from the 2nd through the 4th and turn it into a 3 day holiday.  Thanks Alan!

Malcolm - you're welcome.

Ellen - conspiracy?

Cynthia - yes, I think we celebrate starting the 2nd and continue on to the 5th (why stop at the 4th, if I'm dreamin'... right?)

Funny, why does all the big stuff that actually impacts our lives happen behind closed doors?

Happy July 2nd!

Alan:

So many details of that period were recorded in those letters from John Adams to Abigail. And letter writing has become a lost art form. Imagine what we could learn today if people still chronicled every detail of life in letters. We do have emails, but there are not quite the same, are they?

J. Phillip - yeah, but he was heck of a fashion plate, wasn't he?

I just love this Alan. The confusion doesn't surprise me in the slightest either. It seems some folks don't know it was the British The US declared independence from either. It blows my mind when I remind people of that and they look at me with big saucer eyes!;-)

Cool, Alan!

I just bought my hubby a book about true American History for our anniversary. He, like myself, is a dual citizen, so he's interested in finding out more about his adopted country. I might swipe it from him and check to see if this July 2 fact is in there!

Cheers,

Robin

Robin - the U.S. is one of those countries that actually embraces 'dual citizenship'.
