It seems like we've had an extended summer with all the wonderful, warm fall days lately but there is now snow on top of Pikes Peak and a cold front is expected to blow in this weekend.  If you haven't already done the following "get-ready-for-winter" tasks, now is the time: Furnace:  Have your furnace/heating system serviced by a qualified service company.  Check/clean/replace furnace air filters each month during the heating season.  Fireplace/Wood Stoves:   Inspect fireplace, wood stove and chimneys.  Have each cleaned and serviced as needed. Chimneys:  Inspect chimney for problems. Clean out all obstructions such as leaves and bird's nests. Sump Pump:  Ensure sump pump is operating and draining properly.  Foundation:  Examine foundation walls for cracks, leaks or signs of moisture. ...

Friday marks the start of the Pueblo Association of Home Builders 2010 Pueblo Parade of Homes.  This year has 11 entries located throughout Pueblo and Pueblo County.  This is a far cry from the dozens of parade homes in years past - an unfortunate sign of the economic times.  If you are thinking about buying or if you just want to take a look at new home features on the market (including decorating, landscaping, and green energy), the 2010 Parade of Homes offers all of this and more. You can get your ticket and guide for just $5.00 at area Loaf ‘N Jug stores. The start of the 2010-2011 school year, is just around the corner.  Just one more full week of summer vacation!  The first day of school for most students is Tuesday August 17.  Kindergarteners, sixth graders, and high school freshman start on Monday August 16. On Wednesday, July 7, 2010, COL McLaughlin, Garrison Commander at Fort Carson, toured Pueblo West and then provided an information brief at a special Pueblo West Metro District meeting.  In addition to metro district board of directors, meeting attendees included a couple dozen members of the Pueblo West community, including retired military, active military and military family members.  Here are some tidbits from the meeting that I thought might be of interest to you. In order to forestall any complaints about Ft. Carson's nightly live-fire exercises which can often be heard in Pueblo West, Col McLaughlin stated that the purpose of Fort Carson is to "train America's sons and daughters for combat".  (Kind of hard to argue with that!) There is a new  9/11 memorial on the right side of th...

There are lots of fun activities planned in Pueblo West to celebrate the 4th of July! The first thing I'll be doing is walking in the Liberty Point 5K run/walk at 7:30.  You can register online at http://www.pueblounitedway.org or go to the registration booth at the race start (corner of Purcell and Joe Martinez Blvds) starting at 6:30a.m. on Sunday the 4th.  Proceeds benefit the United Way of Pueblo County. The famous Pueblo West 4th of July parade begins at 10 a.m. at the corner of Purcell and Joe Martinez Blvds.  The parade will run west on Joe Martinez to Civic Center Drive.  The parade starts with the dry entries, followed by the wet and wild section.  Wear your swimsuits and bring your water pistols!  Plan on getting wet! There will be plenty of other activities going on all day i...

Celebrate the 2nd Annual 3-Day Wild Wild West Festival 14-16 May 2010.  The extravaganza includes all sorts of activities including Professional Bull Riders events at the Colorado State Fair Events Center, hot air balloons, carnival rides, and plenty of food and good music on Pueblo's Union Avenue and the Riverwalk.  For more info and schedules see:  http://www.wildwildwestfestival.com/ In a previous Blog post I reported that my friend Cheryl had gone to ABRA Auto Body & Glass and was very pleased with the work that was done.  I can now vouch for that myself.  My husband's recent collision with highway debris was expertly fixed with an absolutely perfect paint match at a great price - even less than quoted.  I met with Karen Fritz, Account Executive with ABRA, and she told me that ABRA ...

As I'm writing this week's blog, it is about 74 degrees outside.  However, I know that by the time you read the blog, it will be far colder with the incoming storm possibly bringing Pueblo some snow.  Hard to believe that Saturday is the first day of Spring, but I'm ready for Winter to be over! Nan Black, my favorite plant expert over at Seufer's Nursery, tells me that flowering plants will be blooming about 2.5 weeks or maybe even 3 weeks later than last year.  So, you still have time to get ready for Spring planting!  Here are some sources to get you started: A Class in Xeriscape, presented by "Gardeners" of Pueblo West, Saturday, March 20, 2010, 8:30 am - 12:30pm at the Colorado Rural Water Association, 176 Palmer Lake Drive, Pueblo West.  The fee is $15.00 per person or $25 per coup...

Here are some bits and pieces of information I've picked up. A report from my buddy Cheryl says that the coyote collision with her Ford Focus was expertly fixed at ABRA Auto Body & Glass at a reasonable price.  ABRA is located at 455 East Enterprise Drive. School District D70, which includes Pueblo West, will change to a 4-day school week next school year.  The Monday through Thursday schedule will require longer school days but will save more than $1 million dollars from the budget.  For more info see: http://www.district70.org/.  I'd be interested to hear your comments on this one; will you be moving your child out of D70?  What will your child do on Fridays while you are working?  Lowe's announced that it will expand its support of the military by offering an all day, every day 10% d...

Most homeowners in Pueblo West are not on the Pueblo West Metro sewer system but on individual septic systems.  A septic system is basically an onsite wastewater treatment facility comprised of a concrete septic tank and a leach field.  According to my informed source, Lucy Rodrigues, at the Pueblo City-County Health Department (PCCHD), there are two types of septic leach fields, leach rock systems and gravel-less, infiltrator systems.   If you are purchasing a home in Pueblo West, you really should have the existing septic system pumped and then checked by the PCCHD prior to your purchase if it has not been recently done by the seller.  PCCHD currently charges $155 to go out and inspect the system (24 hours after it has been pumped).  For home purchases using FHA or VA financing, this ...

If you own a vacant lot in Pueblo West, you may have received a call from a company promising to sell your vacant lot for a wonderfully high (read: inflated) price.  These resale companies (out of Florida and Nevada from what I've heard) will tell you they have a buyer for your lot, charge you several hundred dollars up front, and then you'll never hear from them again.  Usually, these companies ramp up their phone calls right after the property tax bills are sent out.  They get your information by going to the Pueblo County Assessor's site and looking up properties that have not yet been built upon.  (http://www.co.pueblo.co.us/cgi-bin/webatrbroker.wsc/ackatr.p) If you get a call from one of these companies, you should consider asking the caller the following questions: What is the nam...

Just in case you didn't see this info in the Pueblo West View, here is some important home info. The San Isabel Electric Association donated ten "Kill-A-Watt Electricity Usage Monitors" to help home owners measure the electricity usage of their 110-volt appliances.  The monitors are simple to use and can be checked out from the Pueblo West Library for a two-week period.  This is a great way to check your home energy usage.  See http://pueblowestview.com/news/1263452400/2 January is National Radon Action month.  Radon, an odorless gas, found in many homes in the Pueblo area, is the 2 nd leading cause of lung cancer deaths in the United States.  The Environmental Protection Agency has information on radon at their website:  http://www.epa.gov/radon/ .  The Citizens for Clean Air in Pueblo...

From my faithful readers, I've received some more military discount information: The Buckle in Colorado Springs and Pueblo gives a 10% discount to military members. Captain D's also gives a military discount, but you have to be in uniform. Pioneer Sand and Rock - 10% Rocky Mountain Landscape Supply (behind Safeway) - 10% These last two can make a huge difference if you are trying to tame your Pueblo West landscape! One of my Colorado Springs clients, Angela Winterton, has started a blog entitled " Cents & CentsabilitY".   Although Angela lives in the Springs, her information can be helpful for Pueblo residents also! And finally, I'm going to get on my soapbox about the Great Health Care debate.  I was suffering intense pain in my back which then travelled down to my right leg.  My wonde...
