My parents live in Winthrop, MA which is a real slice of Americana. For the past 45 years we have participated in the Point Shirley Horribles Parade. What makes this parade so special is that it's made up of people from the town. All you need to do is come up with an idea, make your sign and costume and head down to the boat landing before the 9 AM start each 4th of July.
The parade route is less than 2 miles long and winds through the Point Shirley area of town, down to the bay and ends in Coughlin Park. At the park you can enter the pie eating contest, runa race or attempt to climb the greased pole.
At night, the town has a beautiful fireworks display. This year the city will be closed to traffic after 6 PM, so make sure you get their early.
The parage certainly isn't the Tournament of Roses, but the spirit of the crowds keeps us searching for ideas to make them laugh. Inevitbly the cry starts echoing through the family in June when someone says, "What are we going to be in this year's parade?"
