Broker/Owners Can Help Their Own Cause.....But Do They???

How much involvement should a broker/owner have in the plan and future direction of an agent?  I saw a comment in my last post titled "Every Day Is Game Day in the Real Estate Business" and it really hit home with me.  Thinking back to my early years in this business, I would have had a much easier time of organizing my business and planning for the future, if I had worked for a broker/owner who gave guidance and provided mentoring.

Broker/owners have many roles and their level of risk and liability in their business is to the nth degree.  It makes sense that brokers have a handle on and some participation in the design and direction of each of their agent's plan to work in this business.  Most agents do not have a plan because they don't know where to start or how to create one.  Just some simple discussion may initiate enough energy to spark some thought with that agent.

Just as ability and level of intelligence vary widely from one agent to another, so, too, will their plans for the future and their amount of production for the benefit of themselves and the brokerage firm.  It would be reasonable for the Broker/owner to dedicate some time to meet one on one with each agent and assist in creating a plan of attack.  It's just another way to win this battle, survive the market conditions and strengthen your business.

I think it depends on the agent.  Some agents need direction and others don't.

Looking back when I was a new agent I know I sat for hours in the office just wishing someone would tell me what to do next.  My theory on this subject is train your agent the right way from day one.  When they are working it is to your benefit as a broker.  The more they bring into the office the less you as a broker needs to go out and find.

Barbara, The disorganized way that most agencies are run boggles my mind. I have been in the business 17 months and have gotten more help from you than anyone else. Thanks for all you do.

Tom....that's absurd....talk about long distance mentoring!!!!  you should have a heart to heart with your broker/owner....

Barbara,

As I work with agents from coast to coast I can tell you straight out more broker owners should be involved with their agents. I speak with some agents that have no idea what they are doing and ask me the most simple of questions that you would think they knew just from obtaining their license..but they dont. An orientation of some sort with a business plan would help most agents start out on the right foot instead of wandering around lost trying to find guidance anywhere they can.

Hi Joe....it's surprising how many agents are flying in the wind....but more surprising is how many broker/owners are not concerned about the tremendous liability with those agents who know nothing!!!

Yes...but its even more suprising how many people with licenses dont know what the heck they are doing...you sometimes wonder how they got their license in the first place. I talk to agents that dont know what an SSA is of agents that have no idea what HAFA is and I wonder if there shouldnt be a way go get rid of some of the "part time" agents that can slow down good agents transactions or ruin them alltogether.

Joe....I don't think it's just part time agents who have these problems....there are actually some very intelligent, well informed parttime agents....there are full time agents who should not have a license....the standards for receiving a license need to be improved and brought up a few notches!!!

Barbara I found this blog very helpful. Just from reading the comments alone, this blog gave me some helpful tips. I am about to go to another Exit Realty office after the one that I use to be at became another real estate brokerage. And thank you for sending me one of your postcards that you send out to your clients-I really appreciate it. Great post.
